Is this epilepsy or am I just insane?

I have a condition that doesn't seem to fit any normal diagnoses. I've seen many doctors and had lots of tests over the years, with conflicting results. It started when I turned 29. Here's how it goes - I get auras that start with a dull feeling in the back of my head, that then progress to a feeling of lightheadedness, minor headache, and pressure in my top teeth. Depending on the severity if the aura, I can also get badly confused, begin to stutter, have minor muscle spasms, and odd, indescribeable feelings. This condition can last for hours or all day. Bright lights, stress, and using my eyes too much can make the condition worse. On top of this, I get sudden jolts where it gets ten times worse. When that happens, I feel very drunk, but in an unpleasant sort of way. Words lose their meaning, simple tasks become impossible, phantom feelings of numbness and tingling occur in certain parts of my body. Simple concepts like Right and Left lose their meaning. I've had bizzare tactile hallucinations, like the feeling of hot coffee being spilled in my lap. These worse episodes can last for five minutes to a couple of hours. I was told that nothing causes all these symptoms, and that it was just stress and I needed to see a psychiatrist. After spending several weeks talking to the psychiatrist, she told me it sounded like some sort of seizure, and proscribed Depakote. After one week on the Depakote 90% of the symptoms faded away! I had been on several different types of anti-depression and anti-anxiety before this, but they either did nothing at all or actually made things worse. Now I've spent several years on just the Depakote, and I do pretty well. I did once make the mistake of trying to cut back on my medication by a third, only to have an episode a month later that was so severe I wound up in the emergency room. So the question is, am I having some sort of seizures? And if not, then what the heck is wrong with me? Thanks for reading this ridiculously long post. - Brian

Hello Brian, Lots of people on this board, including myself, are going through a similar dilemma. Don't let the doctors convince you that your some kind of freak or that your the only person who has ever experience these problems. I've had lots of doctors tell my that my symptoms don't make physiological sense, but after doing a lot of research I can tell you that lots of doctors are full of it. Doctors are very competent at dealing with common things, but when it comes to the less common things, most of them are clueless unless you happen to find the right sub-sub-specialist. It's a challenge! I suggest going to an epilepsy specialist. They'll help you sort things out, but remember that even they don't have all the answers. You'll probably have a bunch of EEGs which can be a very frustrating experience if you don't have an episode while on the EEG, or if it doesn't pick up on seizure activity, but if you are lucky then you'll find the answer you've been looking for. Remember that seizures where you remain conscious don't always show up on EEGs. Good luck! ~Sun~
