Epilepsy And Its Connection With Sleep Apnea And Narcolepsy

Wed, 03/04/2015 - 03:34

Hi guys, my name is Shanks and I am new to this forum.... I developed seizures about 18 years (1997) after a serious tryst with Dengue Fever... According to then medical reports, the fever went to my head and I developed spileptic seizures... I was put on anti-epileptic medication as my seizures were pretty frequent (about once a week)...  I had also quit smoking and all alcoholic drinks.. Gradully it dissipated and by 2000, it became less frequent to about once in 3 months.... thanks to a strict diet schedule coupled with mid-day naps and anti-epileptic drugs...

I stopped going to office in 1997 and started working from home and by 2003 became a full time freelance writer, blogger working from home... By 2004, it was less frequent and I got it only when I didn't get any sleep or had late nights.... by 2005 I was virtually seizure free and began traveling abroad... Did get it a couple of times while abroad..... nonetheless continued the anti-epileptic drugs....

By 2009 got married and I reckon that did the trick.... When you are with someone who can monitor you night and day.... things become a lot easier.... However, the best part is that recently, I realized that my so-called seizures were more sleep induced and not really a epileptic condition...  I experimented with the concerned issues and realized that a lot of us consume anti-epileptic drugs for no reason (which, if stopped causes seizures).. So it is really a Catch-22 situation)... Nonetheless, I plan to gradually phase out my medication, reduce weight (which was a side-effect of my large daily intake of Sodium Valporate)... and focus more on my narcoleptic and sleep apnea conditions...

I have written a small piece on that and if you know someone whom you feel does not really need the anti-epileptic drugs and needs more of a counselling  session coupled with a strict diet and sleep regimen... then please go through this article...

I still feel that epilepsy is a condition and not a disease and can be controlled/ stopped if properly diagnosed..

There is a reason for DISEASE to be used. epilepsy is a disorder in the central nervious system. With the government and in order to get help disorder needed to be changed  Kind of like diabeties and heart ailments. Heart disease?? Governments can put money out for disaease. I also have A-fib is that a disease or a condition or a ailment that can be controlled with medications??As for your stopping yur medication. I would advise you to let your neurologist know and let him help you wean you off them. Stopping medications can cause a person to go into status epilepticus. I know been there done that. I would up in the hospital having 40 convulsive seizures an hour. I came to 3 days later and it took another 2 weeks in the hospital to get ne back on them. So for your own safty please let your doctor know and let him guide you I hope you get seizure free Joe Oh and sleep apnea can also stem from the central nervious system.
