Sun, 04/29/2007 - 09:54
OK, can you believe this. Today I put on an ambulatory unit, the previous 5 of 7 days I had seizures and I am hoping to have an event recorded. So far in my past 10 attempts I havent been lucky. Anyone, ANYONE....have any luck or ways to enduce the seizure? I am at my wits end, the only good news is that I feel half way comfortable that I wont have an event today. Why? cuz i have the machine on my head! :( M

Dear Marshall: Since you've had so many I am sure you've heard it all. All I know is that if you have one in the hospital, they try to induce by leaving the lights on your room all the time and coming into your room all the time to make you stay awake, and periodically shining strobe lights in your eyes, just like they do on the short test. They also told me that I should already be sleep-deprived by the time I enter the hospital. But I am sure you already know all this; I am sorry I don't have anything to add. I am new at this. Meanwhile, though, since you are such an ambulatory "expert," and I have my first 48 ambulatory eeg starting this wednesday, may I ask you a few questions? Such as -- well -- what can you do when you have it on? Can you do things around the house, like cook and clean? can you share a bed, or are you supposed to sleep on the couch or something (or, not sleep on the couch, I guess). Can you do things where you have to bend over, like weed? And why can't you take it off by yourself, why do you have to go back to the clinic to have it taken off? And how do you get yourself to the clinc and back? Also, how did you get them to do it over the weekend? I don't know how to sign off -- I would say "I hope you don't have an event," but on the other hand it seems like you are really frustrated that you can't record them, so I guess I will say I hope you have an event in safe and secure place and it isn't a bad one and they get a good recording so you don't have to do this again any time soon.

I find that doing a lot of vacuum cleaning gives me a seizure, but only when I stop. Also, if I eat a lot of biscuits (at least one whole packet), about 9 hours later I suffer seizures. Watch a thriller or horror movie. Sleep deprivation is a good one. It's different for each person. I spent a week in hospital doing such a test - had fewer seizures than normal. Just typical. Had a large one 30 minutes after they stopped recording!!! Andrew
