My daughter is 15 yrs old and has recently seen a pediatric neurologist specialist. The have done a sleep deprived EEG and it came back normal. I know that this is common and most say that unless you are having a seizure at time of EEG then it will not show up. Well my daughter has been having her seizures once a week and the specialist says that if she is having them this frequently that it would show something on the EEG even if it is not caught in progress? So he says between the description of her episodes and a normal EEG that it is not a seizure and it is the stress related Pseudo Seizures? If you need more info please read my introduction thread and it too has been updated. The scary thing is that her last seizure/episode lasted 40 minutes (this is how long she was unconsience (sp?) and every 2 minutes like clock work her eyes would start rolling back in her head and her whole body would jolt a couple of times like electricity was going through it. We took her to the hospital and all blood work and urine screen was normal as usual. She comes out of them and after a few mintues she is fine and back to normal again? I know that a true seizure it can be very dangerous for her to be down this long, so now I myself am questioning whether it is Pseudo seizures or not? But if it is Pseudo Seizures and it is brought on by stress then why is it everytime she has these she usually is laughing and having fun. This last one happened in mid laugh and she hit the floor with a smile on her face? Before this happened she had told a friend that she was having chest pains and then something happened that was funny so they were laughing and then bam?? I would think maybe heart issues but I dont think seizure like activity is a symptom to any heart issues??

The only way to know if your daughters seizures are epileptic or not are to get them captured on the EEG. Given that your daughter was unconscious for 40min, I think it's careless of your neurologist not to investigate further, and I think you should get a second opinion with an epileptologist.

Hmmmmm? Her behavior when she comes out of them are mostly very silly and alot of laughing as if she cant control it? She also has some wierd mood swings. The other night she took the dogs out and when I walked out behind her after a few minutes I found her crying uncontrollably and when I asked what was wrong she just kept saying she didnt know over and over again?? The specialist offered to have come in and do the EEG for a period of time to try to catch one and said it was our decision but he truely felt it would be a waste of time. He said that her activity is not seizure or epeleptic activity? My question is...if she was unconscious for more than 40 minutes wouldnt it have caused some sort of trauma to the brain? I had heard that being under more than 5 minutes can cause brain damage? Michelle

These emotions that come over your daughter could be seizure related especially since it seems like these attacks of uncontrollable emotions keeps happening over and over again before the spells. There is usually some type of repeated pattern of symptoms when it's a real seizure. I don't know if these would be considered auras or not but I would certainly do the in-hospital eeg for a week. You will probably get an answer to wether or not these are real seizures. I would think if they are real and she is unconscious for that amount of time then there is a risk of something happening. You might want to ask for an EKG and check her heart. These laughing spells could be causing a momentary lapse of oxygen to her heart. I don't know if this would bring on some type of attack or not but it's worth checking out if other tests show nothing.
