Deja vu

Tue, 04/05/2005 - 08:00

Hi, my name is Lisa and this is my first time posting.  I am 39 years and a mother of two daughters.  About 18 months ago, I had two experiences of deja vu.  After the deju vu feeling passed, I had a strange feeling in my stomach (like being on a rollercoaster).  These deja vu experiences were about a week apart and I believe only lasted a second or two.  About two weeks after these deja vu experiences and had a "doom" feeling.  I was in the bathroom and this intense feeling of dread happenned followed by that strange feeling in my stomach.  After these incidents I feel very "foggy" and tired.  I called my family practioner and he ordered an MRI which was "normal" and showed no lesions.  He asked if I wanted to see a neurologist but I declined because I thought it would never happen again.  Well it did--last Friday I had two more episodes of Deja Vu, once when I was laying in  bed and again about an hour later.  I know they were deja vu and at the time intense, however I cannot remember what the particular dream sequence was.  I called my family practioner and he has referred me to a neurolgist that specializes in seizure disorders.  I cannot get into the neurologist until late May? Am I on the right track here?  should I request certain tests?  does an EEG only show irregularities while having a seizure?  Also, I am afraid to drive in case one of these episodes occur.  Thanks!

Lisa, sounds just like what happened to me about 14 years ago. I started to have the Deja vu things and thought that it was something that I ate.But they kept coming on and I finely went to the dr. and he sent me to a nero. I glad that I did as he did an MRI and it came up that I had a problem with my temporal lobe, and what I was experiencing was simple partial seizures. Well since then I have been on the drug merrygoround and it wasn't fun at all, but that is not to say that you shouldn't have it check out as I was told that simple partial could grow into something bigger! Also Lisa, just because an MRI doesn't show up anything doesn't mean that you don't have a problem as many people with TLE (Temporal Lobe Epilepsy) will tell you. Keep a diary when you have your Deja vu's and talk to the nero about them and any other thing that might relate to them. If you nero just po po's them, then check out another dr. Make sure that you find out what they are! Also I was asked if any of my family members had epilepsy, I said no, and didn't have any head injuries, the only thing that might be the problem was back in the 50"s they used a forceps to pull kids out of the shoot and I might have been one of them. Take some time to look this site and check out some other problems that people with TLE have and you might see some other things that apply to you, and that you didn't know was there and could be related to TLE as I found some things that were brother me.Sorry this is so long, but I kinda know what you going through as I did this way back then.Terry

Lisa, I forgot to add that I do drive as I don't feel like that I will lose it. Also all test don't mean any thing as I said before and I hope that you have a nero that knows what to look for.Terry

Deja vu, smelling rotten eggs, stomach feeling nauseous?  Those are pet mail symptoms.  I had those and never had a grand mal until I was 38.   I had one tonic mail when driving that my wife quickly recognized and was able to get me back to normal by yelling at me.  But that was the only one, and I was on medication at the time.  I no longer take medications because they either affect my white blood count, headaches, et cetera.  I have gone cold turkey since 1994 and since then I have one grand mal about every 3 to 4 years, but only when I am sleeping at night.  Strange, but true.  Driving is a no-no.  I am now 63 and the only fear I have is as I enter my golden years is the repeated seizures and their effect on me when I am in my '70s and if they bring on early symptoms of Alzheimers or other age related problems.  I still work as a court reporter and I believe working as long as you can (especially since I have to constantly think about words and concentrating on what is being said in the courtroom) has helped me immensely.

I have looked into the deja vu aspects and since I have no tumors or anything else, just what has caused my seizure activity, and why did it go full-blown at age 38.  Questions that I can't get answered.
