CP and EEG results.... scared to death :(

Fri, 12/09/2005 - 21:25
Hi all. I have a 19 MO w/ mild to moderate rt hemi CP ( effected on left side). Her speech and language are above average for her age. And her cognitive abilities are pretty up there for her age, NO MR. It is just her left side where she struggles w/ motor and fine motor but she is making very good progress. About a month or so ago she began regressing a bit, was having abnormal tone changes, falling alot even when sitting, seemed to have a strange sense of balance, began have more than typical swallowing difficulties,...like everyday now and had an episode where she was giggling/crying while shaking her left arm. We had a swallow study and an EEG. The swallow showed a bit of a delay. The EEG showed moderate abnormalities. Specifically the EEG said : "early in the record and throughout the right central and centrotemporal spike and wave and sharp and slow discharges are intermittently seen at variable frequency. The frequency often exceeds one spike per second" i have a family hx of epilepsy. I have a brother that dev later as an adult. A sister that had febrile seizures. And several cousins that had childhood epilepsy. I understand there is an inceased risk of seizure after having had a stroke. My Daughters was around the time of birth. I am very worried about these EEG results. I knew the crying/giggling shaking episode could have been a seizure, but I was shocked when the neuro told me about the EEG results. My brain turned to mush and I just could not think to ask him all of the questions I have now. We will be going to Boston Children's next Month. Here are some of the questions I have and would so appreciate if ANYONE could helpme. I am a wreck. I feel so sick about it all. *Does the above desciption of the EEG report mean anything to any of you? I mean the type of possible seizure? Severity? *Again, I inderstand there is an increase risk of seizures w/ stroke/cp pts, but is it possible it is more genetic... and possible something she could outgrow? *My biggest concern about seizures is her losing coginitive and/or speech and language, is it possible she has activity where these things will NOT be effected? *The above symptoms I described happened w/i a day or so of her getting the flu vax, could the vax have triggered all of this? If so, what about future vax? *She has terrible motion sickness, the day of the EEG I gave her some benadryl. I just learned on this site benadryl can cause or increase seizures. Could the Benadryl have effected the EEG? Our Neuro says Benadryl does not cause seizres unless a person overdoses on it.... our ped had not hear of it either, does anyone know where I can get data on Benadryl and it causing or lowering seizure threshold? Thank you for you help.

I don't think they should have told you so much about the EEG results. I went to Boston with son and loved everyone. It was the best thing that could happen to us. Son, Wade is doing great. Wait to hear what the doctors say at Children's. Dawn

I really hope that you find help at Boston Children's. We love it there! Wonderful neuro dept. Some people do find that antihystamine like benedryl lower seizure threshold, others have had no trouble. I have two kids who have had seizures. My son has no problems with any antihystamine, while my daughter has had seizures from using them. WRite down any questions you have for the neuro, ..... http://www.brown.edu/Departments/Clinical_Neurosciences/louis/eegcrs.html It sounds like a pretty abnormal EEG from what you wrote. Lots of spike and wave, but ask the neuro to fully explain it in easy terms.... http://www.emedicine.com/neuro/topic128.htm#section~distinction_from_normal_or_nonspecific_sharp_transients Best wishes for help at BC....
