Could I be experiencing epileptic seizures?

Thu, 07/16/2015 - 02:10

I'm 16 years old, almost 17, and I've been experiencing some strange things for quite a long time... I am physically healthy, except that I have insomnia. Mentally, I suffer from severe anxiety + depression that I can't get medication for until I'm 18 because my mom is afraid of medications and won't let me go on any.

It all started in early middle school, when I believe that I had an absence seizure. (I may have had more than just the one, and maybe at an earlier age, but this is the only one that other people have noticed). Apparently the teacher was calling my name several times and I was just staring into space. I had no idea that this happened until my friends were laughing about it later, saying "what did you do that for?" and I had no idea what they were talking about. They told me that I was totally unresponsive to the teacher. I'm not much of a daydreamer, I'm the type of person that simply cannot 'zone out'. I'm always attentive... so I think it might've been a seizure.

After this, starting from the age of 12 or so, I'll randomly get this intense nausea, as well as a sort of numb, yet tingling cold-sweat sensation, lightheadedness, and often a metallic taste in the mouth. My vision starts to get strange (not sure how to describe it? A bit wavy maybe?) and then everything starts fading to white until I can barely see. I've been told I turn white as a ghost. I already have tinnitus, but when this happens to me, the ringing gets much louder. Sometimes other people's voices sound muffled. My own speaking is very quiet. I'm always fully conscious, but my thinking is confused. I have never lost consciousness or collapsed when this happens, but when I feel it start to happen, I sit or lie down, because I'm sure that I'll collapse if I remain standing.

These episodes typically happen for 2 minutes or less. It usually happens once or twice a month. However, it hasn't happened to me in the past few months. (knock on wood).

I thought that I could be anemic, but I know that I get enough iron in my diet, I take vitamins too. I also take B-12 vitamins. I drink a lot of fluids... I don't really think I'm deficient in anything. However, I do notice that I have these attacks more frequently when I haven't been drinking enough water. But then, they also happen when I'm perfectly hydrated. So... Thought it could be low blood pressure, but my blood pressure is normal.

I talked to a couple of friends about it. One suggested that I could have POTS, but I don't think so, because my symptoms don't match up. And I eat enough salt. My other friend told me that she knows someone who has experienced the same things as me, and they got diagnosed with epilepsy. This seemed to fit much more... Could it be that what happens to me are simple partial seizures? And could the "zoning out" that happened to me when I was younger have been absence seizures?

Whenever I have this kind of episode, my mom always makes me try to eat or drink something sugary, but I don't think it helps. I don't think it hurts anything, but it doesn't make me feel any better either. It just has to run its course and go away on its own. But she won't take me to the doctor for it, and neither will my dad, especially since it hasn't happened to me in a few months, so unless I have a grand mal seizure sometime soon, I think I'm probably going to have to wait until I'm 18 to get it checked out by myself or something...

But do you guys think it sounds like epilepsy? Or am I just being a hypochondriac? I'm scared to death and I'd like to know what you guys think.
