Confused about child's EEG results

Sat, 05/28/2016 - 17:29
Several months ago my 2 year old child was referred for a sleep deprived EEG, which was done at a local children's hospital. She has diagnoses of 1q21.1 micro deletion, microcephaly, intellectual disability, and a host of medical conditions not related to the brain. She had been having brief "zoning out" episodes for some time before the EEG was ordered by her neurologist. After the testing was interpreted, we met with the neurologist. He explained that my daughter had an abnormal result, which included spiking mostly during the time she was asleep. He said that this was seen in patients with intellectual disability, but that we should be alert that she could develop seizure activity at some point. He then told me the types of things to look for and be concerned about. We continue to see him every 3-4 months. My daughter's "zoned out" periods continue, however we are able to get her attention and he explained that these may also be related to intellectual disability and shouldn't concern us unless we are unable to get her attention. I have tried uselessly to find information on spikes relative to intellectual disability, or information on spikes not indicating seizure activity but suggesting that it could happen in the future. I'm even starting to wonder if we should get a second opinion. Does anyone here have any knowledge or experience to aid me with this?

Skareha  WelcomeOK the neurologist ordered the EEG. After it was done the neurologist then read the results and yall met. He stated she has an abnormal result, Including spikes. SO what he said was that the abnormalities may cause seizures. All a seizure is 'is an electrical impulse hitting wrong in th brain" That is tha start the seizure is th chain reaction caused by that impulse hitting wrong. The reason he wants you to keep an eye on the zoning out is if a person looks like they are daydreaming they might be havinga absence seizure. Most of the people having them lose conciousness so they may not respond to your talking. Now you may not find what you are looking for unless you learn how to read results from a EEG. Your childs electrical activity is showingthat activity when it is read so it is there during the day and night. If you want a second opennion you can get one. But if the EEG showed abnormalities then the new neuroloigsts will used that EEG and basically varify the diagnosus. As I posted when she looks zoned out and you can't get her attertion then call the neurologist. Keep a diary and write down the things happening in her zone out sessions.I hope this helps Joe
