Brain atrophy

Mon, 03/06/2006 - 22:13
Have any of you diagnosed with epilepsy been told you have brain atophy (enlargement of the ventricles of the brain)? While I was told that my seizures were psychologically caused, my MRI report says that my brain has mild generalized atrophy. This is the same as a CT scan report from 20 years ago when I was 21. The reason I ask if any of you have been told you have this abnormailty is that I have read it can be associated with epilepsy, as well as some other disorders. I want to know if there might be a connection between having this physical abnormality and epilepsy. Thanks TLH

I started having seizures in

I started having seizures in 1987, tried to go off meds 3 hears later, had another seizure and Doc said your on it for life (Dialintin).  In 2007 blacked out at work, maybe 3 minutes, Neuorologist changed meds to Lamictal.  It has never worked, he did not want to hear that.  One MD told me I have Vertigo so the Neuorologist just accepted that.  Started having Focal On Set Seizures shortly after that but Neuorologist stuck with the Vertigo.  Movied to SWFlorida, had test that confirmed not Vertigo, he tried several test and tried to make me dizzy 3 times with no success. Neuorologist here agreed On Set Focal Seizures, added Keppra.  After 7 months of Keppra being increased twice I went to another Neuorologist. After EEG and MRI says I have Brain Artophy.  Wants to put me in hospital 1 week, take meds away day 1 with the idea I will have a grand mal seigzure in that 5 day period.  Everything I read says they will take you off meds gradually (about) 2 weeks and then the hospital and take them all away.  Very unsure that this short period of time will force seizure and what will that tell them anything about Brain Atrophy.  KMP

TLH I am so sorry they seem to be giving you mixed messages. How long have you had the psychogenic DX?> I would ask teh neuro right out what the atrophy means. Yes, I have read that it can be part of epilepsy. I will do some research and see what I can find for you http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=11721124&dopt=Abstract http://www.neuro.wustl.edu/epilepsy/pediatric/articleMRIinTLE.html http://www.e-epilepsy.org.uk/pages/lit/show_review.cfm?id=263 hope this helps some, Gin
