Absence seizures in 6 month old possible??

Sun, 12/10/2006 - 12:33
Hello, My daughter now 9 months old was misdiagnosed with complex partial epilepsy at 6 months old. In my heart, I believe it was absence seizures, just by the way she would stare off for a few seconds and snap out of it when they were finished. She has been on 3 different meds and because they have only made her worse, she now has longer seizures (5-6 minutes) and grand mals. Her development is just fine, if not surpassing other babies, but the neuros keep telling us that now there's a possibility of infantile spasms, which is known to happen in kids with Down's syndrome. We're confused, even the pediatrician doesn't believe all of this, and my husband and I believe they use scare tactics to keep us in the hospital and on the meds that are always being increased and added on, despite the increase in seizures and seizures types. Anyway, we are switching hospitals in January, which is the earliest they'd take us, and I would have to make sure she gets the proper diagnosis and treatment, so I'm trying to learn about absence seizures before the visit so I am informed when I speak about it. She was 6 months when she started having them, so the only (ONLY!) reason absence was ruled out in August 06 was because she was so young, even if her seizures resembled them to a tee, and not complex partial at all!! Sigh, she's 9.5 months old now and I worry for her outcome if she's always misdiagnosed because they think she's too young to have absence seizures and put on meds (Tegretol and Vigabatrin, which are known to make absence epilepsy worse!!!) that are bad for her. She is now on Clobazam and Vigabatrin, both on maximum doses. BTW, her MRI, CT scan, bloodwork and other tests like heart and abdominal U/S are all normal. No history of epilepsy or neurological disorders in the family, healthy pregnancy and delivery. She has 1 seizure every 24-36 hours, which happen when she wakes up. I never had the chance to see how often they occurred when they first started, as we went straight to the hospital Please let me know as much info as possible, I feel like time is running out, sorry to sound so dramatic... Thanks for any replies and info. Please e-mail me at tforget@sympatico, in case I don't get the reply on the site. Tatiana
