abnormal video eeg, but no vusual signs of seizures

Sat, 01/28/2006 - 17:19
My son had an eeg come back abnormal and the doc. ordered a video eeg. It also came back abnormal with spikes(?) in the right side of the brain. However, he does not seem to be having any seizures. Th clinical exam was normal but doc ordered tests to be on safe side. He passed out once at school and has since been diagnosed with hypoglycemia. Has anyone had a similar experience? The doc felt pretty comfortable not treating him right now. Should he go for more testing? Any info would be greatly appriciated. We are new to all of this.

I am sorry that you have such a mystery. Abnormal EEG can mean the potential for seizures is there. I have heard of other neuros who do not treat just because of an abnormal EEG since they feel a percentage of the population will have an abnormal EEG and no seizures. I would be concerned since he has passed out once and there are so many kinds of seizures, some kind of subtle. I would keep a journal if you see anything that concerns you and update the neuro periodically. More testing might just show that same things.

I would say that you should get a second opinion. I used to faint all the time when I was younger. Now, I just black out and fall, but it's not really what I would call fainting. I was tested for diabetes and low blood sugar. Everything else in the world was blamed. Now I'm starting to question every time I have lost consciousness in my life. Yes, go for more testing. Do everything you can think of to get a satisfactory answer.
