Abnormal EEG but not positive for CPS

Here's a question maybe someone can answer for me.  After a recent hospital stay for a pretty significant seizure at work one day, many diagnostic tests were done, one of which of course was an EEG.  This one was done while sitting up in my hosp bed with hubby and friends standing around talking with the technician which I thought odd.  It was done 4 days AFTER the seizure.  Prior to my discharge I was told it was "normal", however, upon receiving my medical records weeks later, I was surprised to see that my EEG was in fact "abnormal" (along with other scans and tests), but showed no signs of seizure activity.  The report also indicated I had normal response to hyperventilations but he never had me hyperventilate!  Anyway, the results showed that my brain never achieved an Alpha wave status and that my Beta waves were decreased.  Anybody out there know what this means or whether they've experienced this.  The Neuro told me I was having Complex Partial Seizures at first, but later recanted.

All I can tell you is this.

My EEG test was done 2 months after my first big seizure.  So I presume it does'nt make much difference how long after the first episode to find out yes or no.  Only about 30% of epi's show abnormal results and they are presumed to have epilepsy for sure.  My CT scan was done a while after that which showed nothing significant which still leaves me wondering if there was nothing significant then there must have been something that showed up.  The rest I don't know.

Your not the only one that scratching there heads sometimes and I'm pretty knowligable.  Hope this was of some use.  some one out their might give you a better explaination.

I hope it's the only one you'll ever have.

Hi there

About a year ago at the age of 27 I had my first ever seizure whilst at home, which was witnessed by my poor sister (who luckily had the frame of mind to contact emergency services). With the exception of a convulsion I had as a baby due to over-heating, I had no prior history of any seizures or blackouts so it was a huge shock for everyone. Not sure if any one else has had this? About an hour or so before I had the actual seizure I started having strange 'headaches' feeling very disoriented.

Unfortunately due to the fact that for most of the first evening I was still quite vague, I have very little recollection of the exact events of that night. Aside to say I underwent a number of tests ( CT scans, blood tests, x-rays) all of which did not show any signs of irregularity or abnormalities. Through out the whole evening the neurologist was on the phone talking the doctors through what to do. I even had a lumber puncture test. Again this was clear. As such, I ended up having an MRI and an EEG test the following week (they had to wait for the availability of both at nearby hospital). Both of these were normal. After my first night in hospital the neurologist visited me on a daily basis to check I was okay. I was tested for pretty much everything from epilepsy to lupus. As none of the tests showed anything, when I went for my check up with the neurologist a couple of months later,he recommended a repeat of all the blood tests and then a sleep-deprived EEG (fun- not). This time the EEG showed a very slight abnormality (a scratch) on one of the lobes, but couldn't conclusively say this was definitely epilepsy. At the time, it was suggested that one of the reasons for both the seizure and the slight abnormality was stress.

I might also mention that during my initial stay in hospital I did find out I was pregnant, however it was explained that whilst pregnancy can cause a lot of things seizures was not one of them. The first three months of my pregnancy due to the uncertainty of my health, I was absolutely petrified of having another seizure and the baby being hurt. The rest of my pregnancy was thankfully an absolute breeze (except for the usual ailments- tiredness, swelling, morning/all day sickness, but for the most part wonderful) and I had no repeat seizures or blackouts. I gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby boy early December (during a relatively easy labor). However about a month after he was born, I began having feelings of dizziness, similar feelings to what I had before I had the seizure which is pretty scary especially with a four month old.

As a result of these repeat seizures, I now have to undergo another EEG. This time a sleep deprived video Telemetry test.

I am a little nervous/apprehensive about the results, as whilst epilepsy is manageable it still feels like a huge deal and life change. However,  having said that I really just want an answer already!

It's kind of reassuring to know that others have gone through similar experiences.

Good luck to everyone!

In my 30 years of being diagnosed with epilepsy I have never had an abnormal MRI or CT scan. My EEGS have been inconclusive, roughly 10 years ago, I had a Video EEG done, hospital stay and hooked up 24/7 for a week. The doctors concluded that I had right temporal lobe seizures.......which puzzled me since most of my activity (tremors, numbness, weakness) was on my right side.

Hmmmmmmm.........

Keep asking questions, you know your body better than anyone, keep repeating things until someone gets it.
