8 YEAR OLD'S UNDIAGNOSED EPISODES

Wed, 02/28/2007 - 10:27
My daughter has been having unusual episodes for a little over a year. She complains of things seeming very far away, like she is looking through a tunnel and amplified hearing. She asks Mommy to whisper, or turn off the t.v. any sound at all because everything is very very loud. She is very frightened while this is going on, but can still carry on a whispered conversation.Lasts for maybe 2-7 minutes. She seems very tired afterwords. It all started with a viral illness, high fever she had 05 Christmas time. It continued after this on and off. We've been seeing a pediatric neurologist. Normal MRI and 2 sleep deprived eeg's that were normal. No pinpoint diagnosis. Possibly migraine varient or small seizures. Said it would probably go away on it's own. This went away for a while early summer and fall. Then the same episodes came back about once a week. Same symptoms along with numbness down one side of her body and breathing difficulty. She said during the last episode, which happened at school for the first time, every time that she exhaled she felt like she was falling. We have an appointment with the ear nose and throat doctor soon. The neurologist has also said we could try migraine or seizure medicine. I'm not sure what to do. It is very frustrating with no diagnosis. My worst fear is that if it is a seizure that it would lead into a larger seizure. The neurologist said that probably won't happen. Usually with seizures what you see is what you get.

The neurolgist also mentioned slim possibility of psychotic. I firmly do not believe this. She is an A student, violinist and plays on a traveling soccer team. She has lots of friends and is a happy child. I felt that he was grasping for anything with that comment.
