2 year old had seizure now brain damaged

Hi everyone. I'm writing because my two year old niece recently had a prolonged seizure (about an hour) with a fever of about 106. She had a few seizures before but doctors just labeled them "febrile." This last seizure severely damaged her brain....we almost lost her. Now she is breathing on her own and her heart rate is stable, but she is not cognizant. It has been almost three weeks now since the seizure. She just stares into space and occasionally postures/spasms. It's heart-wrenching. Most tests (MRI, EEG) have come back normal. The doctors have administered various anti seizure meds and she has not had another seizure...but they still don't understand what caused the seizure NOR can they give a prognosis. We are all desperate to have our little girl back--or to know if that's even a possibility. Has anyone ever had anything like this happen to their loved one?

this is heart wrenching! I wish that I had something useful to offer but it sounds far outside your specialists' experience. I am sure I'm not alone in hoping things improve.

If you're seeing a neurologist, I highly recommend you stop now! I've been through 5 neurologists in my life and I am only 23. They are nothing but average doctors who know about general neurologic problems, not epilepsy. I did my research and started seeing an epileptologist and it has changed my life for the better. I wish I could sue that neurologist for malpractice, but it is apparently very common that neurologists don't know a lot about epilepsy. I was shocked! May God bless you and your little niece and I really hope I could help at least a little!!!
