Extraordinary insight, Artistic expression??

Wed, 07/12/2006 - 20:49
"With TLE, I see things slightly different than before. I have visions and images that normal people don’t have. Some of my seizures are like entering another dimension, the closest to religious or spiritual feelings I’ve ever had. Epilepsy has given me a rare vision and insight into myself, and sometimes beyond myself, and it has played to my creative side. Without TLE, I would not have begun to sculpt." This testimony comes from a woman who suffers from — and, obviously, often exults in — temporal lobe epilepsy. This condition (TLE, for short), is caused by unusual electrical activity in the brain’s temporal lobes A significant proportion of people with TLE report that their seizures often bring on extraordinary experiences of transcendent wonder, luminous insight — by: C.P. Can you relate to that at all? I can. Do you enjoy expressing yourself by writing short stories, song lyrics, or poetry? You don't have to worry about being good. Or maybe you are amazing! Either way, you can feel safe among your peers. I've created this forum so that you we can have one more way to express whatever it is we may think about and feel. Try it, write poetry! It doesn't have to rhyme. It doesn't have to be directly related to epilepsy. Because as we all know, having seizures can cause a domino affect that ripples through our lives in many areas. We obviously have thoughts about other things! So let's feel free to express ourselves!! ..to write. Unless of course, you have Writing Epilepsy (a rare reflex syndrome in which seizures are triggered by writing). NocturnalPoet

This is not directly related (in more ways than one). However I do compose music and have been doing this for many years. I did not know that I had epilepsy until November 2005 when I had my first tonic/clonic seizure. I did manage to complete one composition in late 2005, and another one by August 2006, but in my experience, the epilepsy has been a liability toward my composing. One of the reasons I said that this is not directly related is that I use mathematics in my composing. In other words, there is a great deal of discipline and structure in my composing and epilepsy is the total opposite of discipline and structure! wflisa

I'm a painter. An artist. Epilepsy has shown me things, allowed me perceptions. At once hampered and gifted with this strange electrical dance. I curse, I am thankful. E reminds me to be present. How temporal all sensations are, what a gift they are, how quickly it can all be taken away, garbled. Suddenly I no longer read or write or speak. I hear birds singing. "Be kind to all that lives"

There is an interesting book on this topic that you guys may want to check into. It's called "Seized - TLE as a Medical, Historical, and Artistic Phenomenon." By Eve LaPlante. It talks about how those with TLE may be predisposed to having more interest or compulsions towards the arts, creativity, religion, etc. due to areas of brain activity in TLE seizures.
