Atkins for adults & xylitol

Sun, 07/20/2008 - 20:53
Hi, everybody. I am drug-resistant after trying tegretol, lamictal/ zonegram and was told to try the "modfied Atkins" diet by my neurologist ( Atkins, but with 10-15 grams of carbs per day). I have been on my own with this so far (will try to get him to refer me to a nutritionist specializing in such things) for about 6 weeks and can't tell if it's making a difference or not. I was going bonkers without any sort of dessert-like thing and wanted to yarf at the taste of Stevia. I read that Xylitol has zero carbs and made a batch of macaroons using it. My question is this: does anyone know if xylitol is allowed in the ketogenic or atkins diet? In one book (the Ketogenic Diet by Dr. Kossof), it said to limit low-carb products with sugar alcohols to one per day "avoid sugar alcohols" is the paragraph heading, however. But then I saw a holiday dessert recipe on this forum that contained xylitol... so anyone know what the effect of xylitol is on ketosis? I really want to know if I have to end my love affair with the macaroons... Any advice on this or other things related to the modified Atkins for adults would be much appreciated! Truly, Stacey in Oakland

Hi Stacey,

I believe xylotol behaves differently to the other sugar alcohols, has less impact on blood glucose levels and is without the gas/intestinal problems associated with sugar alcohols in general. This has been our experience;my son has both diabetes and epilepsy, and it seems that the low carb diet benefits both conditions.

Try googling bernstein diabetes forum, log in as a guest, or join(it's free), and I think you'll find alot of very informed people when it comes to LC diet/carbs etc. Just fire away with your questions and I'm confident you'll get lots of help.

You will also find a great recipe section there with all sorts of delicious low carb meals/snacks and desserts. No need to go bonkers a moment longer!

Good luck!
