Any info on Ketogenic Diet

Sun, 01/09/2005 - 16:44
My three year old son has daily myoclonic seizures, as well as some generalized seizures. He is maxed out on Lamictal. He takes B6, and two weeks ago Zonegran was added to his medications. His seizures have gotten a little bit better, but he has lost words, and has regressed. Prior to this, we tried Topomax, and he had a horrible reaction. We want to try the Ketogenic Diet. I just e-mailed Johns Hopkins about it. Have any of you tried it? Any success? Thank you!

Hello, we have our 4 year old daughter on it going into the seventh month the seizures have been reduced from about 20 to 3 per month she is still on kepra  If she ever goes seizure free for a month or two they will start reducing the medication.  There is a movie called First Do NO Harm that gives some information on the diet.  Our daughter adjusted to the diet farly well.  It takes some time for meal preperations and planing if you want to leave your child some place to go and do something.  It's worth trying If it lets you get your child off the rollacoster of medications someday.

We have been on the zonegran for about 4 days and 2 days he hasn't had a seizure.  They seem to occur at night between 4-5am he doen't have them all day long some some of the notes i have been reading.  I am tired of trying different meds this is the 6th one in 4months. I really don't like the side effects that I have been reading about the zonegran. If anyone has bben on the diet and would e-mail me personally about the ups and downs and ins and outs I would really appreciate it. I am in the process of getting the movie and am currently reading the diet book.  my email address is

it would be nice to talk with someone who is going thru the same experiences that we are. We live in a towm of about 5000 people and we are the only ones in town with epilepsy so there isn't a support group or anything. Thank you.   Eva
