Ticked Off, once again.

Thu, 03/04/2010 - 15:06

My being "ticked off" was just increased while watching a public awareness commercial on TV about 'Adult ADHD'. The website for it is http://www.adhdactionguide.com/

I'm sure that commercial will be beneficial for everyone who has been diagnosed with ADHD. But for the people who do have and do not have epilepsy, what on earth do we need to do in order to get any public awareness commercials on TV about epilepsy? Is there something legally blocking this from happening? Or possibly something religiously blocking any public awareness commercials on TV about epilepsy?

Bruce - Personally I feel that those behind the ADHD commercials should include the mention of the many epilepsies in their ADHD commercials, particularly ADHD Inattentive vs absence/petit mal/complex partials - especially in children.  Often the primary motivation of the commercials seems to be to push the latest drugs vs consumer education.  Also, some of the ADHD commercials seem to overenthusiatically promote the use of the ADHD medicines as being almost perfect/failsafe remedies for almost everyone with attention deficit(s) and neurological challenges involving ideas such as distractibility and short attention span when, in fact, the meds for ADHD don't work exactly that way due to the underlying difficulty of trying to temporarily reduce ADHD symptoms for everyone with ADHD.  At times I think there's an effort to toss truth out the window with some of these commercials in an effort to simply drum up business and to sell more medicines.  I tend to feel that there may be a prejudice against epilepsy in the news media primarily due to the idea of so frequently identifying all of epilepsy as Julius Caesar type of theatrical grand mals only.  I also feel that the numbers of persons who have ADHD is greatly exaggerated in a lot of commericials in an effort to try to sell drugs to persons who do not have ADHD and who will not benefit from the ADHD medicines.  Sorry if my view offends some readers.  - pgd
