School won't administer diazepam - what are my rights?

Sat, 06/11/2016 - 03:05
My 5 year old son was recently diagnosed with epilepsy. They said that since he is on the keppra his chances of having another grand mal seizure are low and have given us diazepam as a remedy if this happens. We signed my son us for summer school (at our local school) and I contacted them a month in advance to let them know about the seizure and medication. They told me to get forms signed, letters from doctors, etc. I did everything they asked and in the end they wrote me to say that they would not give my son diazepam if the need arose and that they would only call 911. They said that they asked around and that no one would “volunteer” to do it. We were told to give this drug within 5 minutes of a seizure to avoid brain damage or injury since my sons seizure was so long in duration. My question is this…what are my rights as a parent. I feel awful that we were forced out of the summer school program and now I am highly concerned about starting kindergarten there in the fall. I don’t know my rights so I am not sure what kind of stink I can make to ensure that my son is safe. School are loaded with kids who have diabetes, peanut allergies etc. all of which require a life saving drug. I know that mine is a rectal drug which makes it very unattractive to administer but I have not been given any other options. I am sure that this has come up with other parents and I am just not sure what to do exactly or who to ask for help. And advice is appreciated. I live in Southern California.
