People with epilepsy can't get married in Turkey

Thu, 08/18/2011 - 23:17

The article on Mothers of Children with epilepsy in Turkey left out a major reason for concern.  Turkey still practices eugenics.  People with epilepsy are not allowed to get married in Turkey.  How is a mother going to react when her child is diagnosed with a disease that will forbid her child from marrying and having children?  Depressed?

It's only been since 1983 that the last state in the US (Oregon) stopped sterilizing people with epilepsy against their will.  People didn't live with this disease as a secret for no reason.

Lack of Awareness, Lack of Communication, Lack of Support, and the Lack of Understanding, equals the Lack of Knowledge, which results into FEAR and STUPIDITY! Wouldn't it be amazing if the information about seizures and epilepsy is distributed out to people worldwide, as quick as doctors prescribe medication for their patients? I don't know exactly what's keeping people from discussing information about seizures and epilepsy with one another, but do have a strong feeling that it has something to do with religion.

I think this information is not true. There is no practice of eugenics.I wish it would be because I do not want to have the risk to have a child with epilepsy.I don't want my child will have such a pain as I do.I do not want anybody have epilepsy even he/she is my enemy.

I am a Turkish man and haven't heard such a thing before read it here.People with epilepsy can get married. They also can have driving licence as I do.I can drive and ride and there's no legal problem with it.

The only restriction is with the military services. They don't allow you to become a soldier. If you don't specify it as you apply to it and have seizure when you are on duty you will be judged on military court with the offence of giving missing information the the state. That is all.

Btw. Bruce,I think it is not the relligion. It is something with feeling ashemed, feeling depressed and the thought of been isolated from people.I had all of them when I firstly have seizures about 17 years ago(when I was only a 14 yo boy). epilepsy.com is a good way to make people feel better I think.People with seizures can see here that they are not alone and this can be kind a cure for their depression I think.I also am not a doctor but I feel this way inside of me.
