Better Awareness Needed in Colleges & Workplaces

Sat, 12/13/2008 - 17:42

Hello There

I am a 17 yr old College student from Ontario, Canada; I am energetic, fiery and have Epilepsy. I come from a small city which is known for its Cancer centre, and for helping youth with various disabilities. Yet for some reason, Epilepsy is not a recognized disorder, and 1 in 5 people will not know what this term means. Therefore they will not know how to respond in situations should someone with Epilepsy have a seizure. First Aid will not be made available and that I can account for.

In the past I have had seizures in which, post-seizure, I find myself in hazardous situations, including being on the floor of a moving school bus and at the bottom of a set of stairs. All because no one knew what to do and many did not know what was even happening.

I would like to be able to make everyday citizens more aware through a small organization I have put together called Free Epilepsy Foundation. Future plans include bringing information to the table of my small community, and educating fellow college students. Educating those around you is the most important part because someone 500 miles away is not going to be the person who’s going to keep you safe, or even save your life in some cases, during a seizure. It will be the person standing 5 feet away that will be coming to your aid.

Anyone who can help me in anyway possible will be beyond greatly appreciated! Stories, history/background, development, or anything about epilepsy would be appreciated. I would like to add things to my up and coming website. This will help to educate others on why its happening and to know what to do before it happens.

Please feel free to leave comments for me :) Remember I am a young college student (therefore just learning from my mistakes) trying to make things safer for everyone. I'd especially like to be able to educate the staff at the college I attend; at my highschool last year I had a seizure and no teacher knew what to do. I fell off the chair and smacked my head because they hadnt known better than to make sure I was in a more secure position. But any input on this would be great! You do not have to e-mail me with any ideas, you can post them here!

Hey,

I am an 18-year-old college student from Portland, Oregon.

In past seizures, they were usually at home or somewhere safe.

Are there any community{2-year} colleges in your area?

You may have better luck talking to students at 2-year colleges.
