topamax vs zonegran

Wed, 01/23/2008 - 17:31
my neuro has just prescribed me topamax for some headaches i've been having... after researching, i found that topamax has a lot of the same side effects as zonegran. several years ago i was on zonegran and got very sick from it; extreme depression and developed "dumping syndrome" (got down to under 90lbs and i am 5'5). are these drugs at all related? if i had a bad effect from zonegran is it likely i will suffer the same on topamax? granted i was okay on zonegran at doses up to 300mg/day... i got real sick when my doc at the time raised me to 500mg. i'm scared to start this because i don't want to get sick like that again. btw i have partial complex seizures and already on tegretol which has been working great for me. neuro wanted to add topamax to the mix for constant headaches i only started having 8 mos ago.

I was on topamax about 3 yrs ago and very severe effects such as weight loss, not being able to sweat, and my skin always crawled. my neuro said he had taken it for headaches, but it gave me migrines. It also made my seizures worse because when I got to hot I would start seizing. Now my new neuro has put me on zonegran and I'm starting to have the same effects. I didn't know they were related at first or I would have said no. I' m getting off of it asap I would suggest you do the same. But thats my opinion and it depends on whether or not you are willing to risk waiting it out to see what it will do. I'm out of choices and also have a VNS It dosen't control them either. good luck.
