Drinking and Epilepsy...

Hi, I'm Shelitha. I'm a freshman at UTK. I've been really good so far about stopping the whole drinking thing. I use to party and drink all the time when I was younger, around junior year, but at the end of that year my seizures got worse. So in my senior year, I had a complete turn around and went months without having a drink, but now I'm at college, one that is pretty known as a party school, although it is a dry campus... right... It kinda hard to have a social life without drinking, and I know that sounds totally lame and I've never been one to be pressured into anything, but I still like to drink I've just been staying away from it because it could be potentially really dangerous. Its soooooooo tempting here though. I havent had anything to drink since May, when I had a glass of champange after my graduation, but this weekend its like all everyone wants to do is drink and I keep getting invited to all these events based around drinking. Even a student organization I am in is even having a social and what do they decide to do... have a flip cup challenge... fantastic... The first party is thursday and I really just don't know what to do, because I dont want to go and just sit there and be the only sober person, because I know from fact that that sucks. But then on the other hand, I'm scared to drink, because I havent had a drink in a long time and dont really know my limits anymore and its really bad for your epilepsy right??? But then if I don't go I feel like that would look bad and I would probably be bored this weekend... I need advice.

I've posted this elsewhere here before, and it still goes for me about alcohol. As much as I hate my Epilepsy, I'm not going to give something like alcohol the chance to be the reason as to why I have a Seizure. The way I see it, if I do have a Seizure, I'll know it wasn't because I was drinking. Simple process of elimination. I know the things I need to do to make sure I take care of myself right, take my meds, eat right, and get plenty of rest. Drinking doesn't fit anywhere on that list.

you know what's even more fun than being drunk with other drunk people...........Being sober and secretly making fun of all of the drunk people. I've actually been going over the same dilemma, my husband and I are going to a party this weekend and there will be drinking and this is the first time in a long time that we will be going out alone, without kids. I have not had a drink in 9 years and have been considering it, but I have been reading and and decided now that it's not worth it. I've heard that you can actually have a seizure a few days later because of drinking and I can't risk that with my kids. It's scary enough to think that I could have a seizure at any time (driving my kids to school) so I don't want to increase my chances. When you go to this party this weekend show your friends that people actually can have fun without drinking. Just think, you will be the only one who will get anything done the next day and with out the hangover. Do you have a friend who doesn't drink who can go with you?

Thanks everyone. I have my plan for this weekend. I weighed my options and I'm not going to drink. I really don't want to, because it's not worth it and I'm glad that I can go to these events and not feel bad for not drinking. :)
