seizures with periods

Had a few questions and didn't know if anyone could help.  Back in March I began taking Dexatrim diet pills.  I was fine for about 10 days and when I got my period, I had my first 2 seizures.  The first one happened around noon, my husband was home and he called for an ambulance.  They took me to the hospital, ran tests and discharged me around 5:30.  I came home and pretty much went to bed.  Around 1:00 am I had another seizure, my husband took me back to the hospital and they admitted me.  I was there for 2 days and they ran all kinds of tests.  Everything came back ok and the neurologist blamed the pills.  I didn't have any more seizures until last Tuesday night.  We went to an amusement park, I took a Dramimine around 11am.  We came home, I got my period, went to bed and around 5:30 am I had another seizure.  I called my doctor and the neurologist.  My doctor said to get the 6-hour EEG done.  I have it scheduled.  My neurologist called me last night and told me to get an EEG and MRI scheduled ASAP.  I am  in the process right now.  Didn't know if anyone had any insight.  I am a 36 year old woman, mother of 2 small children who never had any problems until March.  Thanks for any insight.

Suzanne -

While there are many different forms of epilepsy, I have never heard of what you have described.  To be honest, it sounds like a side affect of the RX you are being weaned off of, versus epilepsy.  I'm a 53 yr old woman . . . I had my first seizure at 14 . . .  and my last one in 1989!  YAY!

I would double check with your doctor regarding the RX he gave you for anxiety.  Let me know how it goes.

You should check with your Dr. prior to any medicines being taken. Some cold pills, diet pills and a few others will lower your medicine threshhold. I learned the hard way, I had a horrible tooth act took Ultram that is a big No No as well as benadryl and some other cold meds. I also understand that menstral cyle can increse seizure activity. So check with your Doctor he or she will not mind and it will save you a lot of grief. Take care Toneya

Hi, I only have seizures around my period. My Dr. tells me that most women do have them around their period or ovulation. I was on birth control for a while and it aggravated my seizures. I, of course, am off the pill now. They came every two weeks just along with my cycle. My Dr. also told me it is the hormone fluctuation that is causing the seizures because it is such a drastic change in the body. I don't know if you ever heard of the pill called Ativan. It is used to help seizure clusters. My Dr. is having me try this: Taking 1 ativan per day, a few days before my period and then during my cycle. I tried it for the first time this month and I had no seizures. I hope it works for me because I have tried so many medications! Good luck to you
