Does Epilepsy ever totally go away?

I've read that it does. But I have my own theory on it. I believe that Epilepsy is like a Volcano – it can lie dormant for a very long time and then raise its ugly head again. We all know that some Volcanoes have been dormant for thousands of years but that they can erupt again any day. Now because us humans don't live for that long, some epilepsy may remain dormant for our whole life and others are not so lucky. I've read a few stories when the people have gone 20 years with no seizures or medication and then bang they start having seizures again and need to be put back on medication – now I'm sure they thought that they didn't have it any more! I myself have gone 7 years (between 7 and 14) without any seizures or meds and then start having them and needing meds again. I recently had another seizure my first since 1997 although that was triggered by a drug so I'm just waiting to see if that's all it was. I use to wear a Medic Alert Bracelet before and are going to start wearing it again when I get my replacement one as I lost my first one – I think everyone who has a history of seizures should wear one cause you just never know when you may have another one

I think that statement is completely accurate also. My first neurologist couldnt find anything on an eeg so he said he was all a problem in my (head) not related to seizure activity at all. although everyone ive been around has seen them. I wrecked my car and a man I know but not very well, pulled me out of it. he knew me, but i couldnt remember him at the time, he was a medic, knew what was happeneing and my neurologist still says i probably hit my head in the accident. when the seizures started at 2 from spinal meningitis, they found the problem from high fevers. when i had my daughter, my ex hit me in the head, the doctor then said the hormones and the cat scan showed a blood hemorrage that probably started them again. now 18 years later, the nuerologist says he cant find anything. i dont have a seizure disorder, there is no way it couldnt be seen on their eegs. ive tried to tell him i dont have them all the time, stress, being tired, sometimes out of the blue,,, but usually something triggers it. i cant find anyone who will listen. my kids have seen it. my husband now of 10 years has seen it, while im asleep, awake, how do i pretend with that.?? now what.

I agree that it can lie dormant for years without any activity. I was told that iI grew out of mine and never had any seizures for 5 years and was off my medication for a year and then i had a seizure. Ive read that there is no real cure for epilepsy that all there is is methods of controlling the seizures. my MedicAlert bracelet is now permanently on my left wrist because like you said you just never know. I'm already on my 3rd bracelet... i move around alot.

If only! I had febrible convulsions as a child, I then went on to have grandmal seizures from 15-20 and then at 25 I was diagnosed with TLE, partial seizures, although for some time they thought I just had migraine aura. I spoke to my neuro as to possible causes of this happening at this time in my life and she said that your epilepsy can infact lie dormant for many years and then go through and active period. I hope it goes to sleep on us all soon! Bx
