What goes on during a seizure? Do you remember anything/does it hurt?

Fri, 04/13/2007 - 22:35
My six year old has generalized Tonic clonic, Drop attack, Myoclonic...Seizures. I just want to know what she is going through. I hurts terribly to see her have seizures but her neuro says they don't hurt and she doesn't remember anything. Is this true, because she appears to be in physical pain and most of the time she screams during them. Aferwards she cries and appears scared.

Hello,

If you are awake like I was...believe me you feel the severe muscle jerking pain.  I had weakness in my legs which made me collapse where I was standing at the time.  Unable to do anything until I let the seizure run it's course.  Sometimes the weakness in my right leg lasts months.  My right shoulder really hurts for a while after so I go to physiotherapy. I had many other symptoms along with it and I remember almost everything and felt everything.  First the burning smell, metalic taste, followed by the muscle jerks, weakness, my vision went blurry, the room looked distorted, I felt buzzing and ringing in my ears, confussed, migraine after.

I am sure there where other things I just don't remember right now.  I worry all the time about having another seizure because of these issues.  So of course I will make sure I take my prescribed med's to keep them under control.  I haven't had one since January 8/09.  Regarding feeling or remembering anything:  I did, and I remembered almost everything and felt that I knew what was going on around me, I just felt like my bedroom looked different because it would happen as soon as I woke up and got out of bed.  I tried to type on my computer my symptoms but my eyes where too blurry and my fingers where too weak. Thank God for spellcheck. I am 48 years old.

So I guess it depends on the type of seizures you have had.

Hi Abbeygirl. Nice to see you here, but less than nice the reason why. I'm really sorry your poor baby is going thru this.... Truly I am... I really appreciate the powerful effect seizures can have, and don't treat seizures lightly... Or 'triggers' either... The triggers are various too. I appreciate your baby might yet be to young to have experienced the delights of tea, coffee, and chocolate, sleep deprivation, etc. As I do your poor baby be less than aware when your baby does, those could act as 'seizure triggers'. As Autumn points out' normal' is a setting on a washing machine, and there is a heavy price to pay when seizures occur. There sure is nothing 'normal' about seizures, and effects of them when those triggers turn up. Mostly at times when least expected or wanted. Brushing your teeth, or eating comes to mind here as two powerful triggers.... This might sound dumb, but my experience has been with the seizures I have had that have progressed beyond the 'partial stage' is....Bruises, once a powerful feeling in my back? Kind of like I had been punched, stabbed, or kicked.... I have had a bad headache that my neuro put down to after-effects of my body going thru the seizure. As Jacky 99 points out it can be frustrating when seizures happen and you cannot remember a thing. As jacky also comments ... which is a good point....People can be driven crazy by the not knowing what happened while they were 'out' or even if they ever have been 'out.'... Some people during 'seizure episodes' really have difficulty in remembering who they are, and have met... True... I can't imagine having to have to use an alternative method to 'test' my recall of seizure events. So just imagine how your baby feels..... Your baby can't tell you how they feel because of seizure effects. Or place a coping mechanism in place...That has to be painful and impact. I wish you all the best. I hope you hang in there, and read the excellent links on this site that are far better than abstracts... Also.... Talk to your baby- even if that might seem difficult at times.Try and bring your baby up not to hate having seizures, and to talk freely about the effects of them... That helps..... Try and stay positive and upbeat that helps. Please keep us updated on your progress. Cat. "Many false prophets are gone out into the world." 1 John 4:1

Hey happycat2, What a nice comment about me that you use to prove a point. I didn't grow up hating them I just recently started to hate them but also relized that not all teens are "protected" from the harms of the world like smoking, alchol, and addicting drugs because of my seizures and my life is not reuined like theirs. Even though I thought it was it really isn't. My life was reuined when I was an eighth grader with a dream of being on the basketball and volleyball teams all the way through HS. I found the alterative of CHEERLEADING where I got to go to all the games just like being a player. Which was quite fun and I enjoyed while it lasted. "Normal is just a setting on the washing machine, and those that have Epilepsy are far from normal!!!!!" (; Autumn ;)
