seizures with periods

Tue, 08/16/2005 - 08:08
Had a few questions and didn't know if anyone could help.  Back in March I began taking Dexatrim diet pills.  I was fine for about 10 days and when I got my period, I had my first 2 seizures.  The first one happened around noon, my husband was home and he called for an ambulance.  They took me to the hospital, ran tests and discharged me around 5:30.  I came home and pretty much went to bed.  Around 1:00 am I had another seizure, my husband took me back to the hospital and they admitted me.  I was there for 2 days and they ran all kinds of tests.  Everything came back ok and the neurologist blamed the pills.  I didn't have any more seizures until last Tuesday night.  We went to an amusement park, I took a Dramimine around 11am.  We came home, I got my period, went to bed and around 5:30 am I had another seizure.  I called my doctor and the neurologist.  My doctor said to get the 6-hour EEG done.  I have it scheduled.  My neurologist called me last night and told me to get an EEG and MRI scheduled ASAP.  I am  in the process right now.  Didn't know if anyone had any insight.  I am a 36 year old woman, mother of 2 small children who never had any problems until March.  Thanks for any insight.

Hi Peggy, I to seem to have them right after my midcycle or right around my period too. It is not like that every month but for the most part it is. I am a year older than you and started having seizures at 8 years old. By the way I have partial and complex partial seizures. The seizures were not really too bad or even on a monthly basis until I got into high school and started my period for the first time. I also like you have been through all of these medications (8 so far). I am currently being tested for surgery to remove the scar tissue in my temporal lobe that they believe is the cause. An interesting thing I wanted to tell you about my experience with the Keppra (I also take Depakote along with it) is that ever since I started taking it in early 2005 I have ONLY had nocturnal seizures where I wake up at night or have them in my sleep. That is the positive side. The negative side in my case is that it is making me so tired and depressed. So I have to weigh the good with the bad. Let me know how it is working for you. Dawn

Toni Munson I had my first seizure after the birth of my 3rd child. I am now on Tegretol. Every time right before, during, and after is when I have more seizures. The Tegretol cannot control them. The rest of the month the Tegretol does fine. I have read about these seizures and read that progesterone is being used and has helped so many with this. I am going to go to my doctor and talk with her about it for me also. My first seizure was at the age of 28. Now I have the small ones.

 Toni,

I started w/ my seizures at 8.  Pre puberty I guess...lol  I have hormone sensitive/complex partial seizures .  Iam 44 yrs old & have been controlled most of my epilepsy life Well now Im peri menepausal & about 6mths ago my pre ovulatory (when the estrogen spikes) seizure had come back.  I got the natural compounded progesterone (difficult to find a dr who will prescibe it) & haven't had a seizure the past 2mths I've been on it.  They wanted me to take it from day 14-28, well I changed it to day 9-23, cause day 9-12, between 11-3pm is when I would have my seizure. Progesterone should help you w/ this battle!!!  Good luck!!  Let us know how u do!
