Lamictal and birth control pills

Mon, 03/20/2006 - 22:38
I was just wondering if anyone was on brith control as well as Lamictal. My neurologist said that there is no interaction, but I came across 2 studies on the interaction that stated that it decreased Lamictal concentration by almost half. I'm not sure if I should be worried to start the birth control.

I have been on Apri (sp?) and Lamictal at the same time. I have noticed no problems. I only take 100 mg bid, but I have been fine taking both.

I was told not to long ago by my neuro that they both cut each other in almost half! No wonder I got pg 2x's on birth control pills and have had more that enough aura seizures to last me forever. I am a faithful pill taker for all my meds, believe me so I know that I didn't skip a dose of BC at all. I wish I could find more information on it because I have had to pay out of pocket for other methods than the pill, ie, depo shot. I just recently have gotten off of that although it stays in system for like up to a year. i would like to get the non hormonal IUD but ins won't cover and I would like to appeal if I could get more information, any ideas??

I'm taking lamictal and used to take yasmin. I stop using it because as soon as my doctor switch me to lamictal he told me to stop taking it.I used yasmin because my period was so awful and painful thay my OBGYN prescribed it. I didn't used it for birth contro but still the reason my doctor told me to stop was because he informed me that the birth control pills tend to lower the effect of lamictal therefore if I insisted on taking Yasmin he needed to increase my lamictal dosage. I chose to stop taking yasmin because I feel that the less lamictal I have in my body the less side effects I'll have to deal with and also when it come my time to start a family I'll have less medicine in my body which will benefit my baby. I prefer to bare with the pain from my period.I hope that this info. helps you. Take care.
