Weird Taste

Tue, 10/11/2005 - 18:35
Hi Everyone, Ok, this is going to sound weird but for the last 24 hours I have had a strange taste in my mouth. Just to give you some background I have never had a seizure in my sleep before, I have never bitten my tongue in my sleep nor have I had a funny taste. I have partial seizures secondarily generalized seizures (grand mal) and each time I have bitten my tongue. Over the last few days I have been waking myself up biting my tongue. Nothing major but a painful nip at the back of my tongue. I woke up this morning and as soon as I opened my eyes I felt nauseous (Whenever I have had a seizure in the past I always feel nauseous and then have a tonic seizure, and for a few hours after I also feel incredibly nauseous). I can't quite pinpoint it but the taste I have in my mouth can only be described as something like honeysuckle. I also bit my tongue again in my sleep (Which woke me up again...how inconvenient!!!!) That's two nights in a row. In total I have done this 6 times in the last 8 weeks. It's seriously disturbing my beauty sleep! Has anyone ever experienced any of this before? Jenny

Hi Jenny, I woke up last night with a partial seizure and for the first time I experienced a sweet taste after drinking water.  It was very strange and I had never had that happen before.   As for the tongue biting, I have to say I am lucky enough to never have bitten my tongue during any one of my seizures, however I have injured myself pretty badly.  I'm glad I am not the only one who experienced the weird taste after a partial seizure.

Thanks.

I was so relieved to know that I am not the only person that experiences the weird taste.  I never knew how to explain it nor did I want to ask my doctor whom I am in the process of "firing".  As for biting my tongue, fortunitely I have never.  But, I did fall off a rock while rock climbing and had to get stiches once.  I think the expience made me realize that things are going to happen but I'll live!

Auras

Jenny, The bitter taste can be a sign of an aura. A seizure may come after or may not. I have auras and usually I dont have an aura before a seizure. But my aura is a feeling in my fingers. But there are many weird auras, smells, tastes, colors, feelings.... As for you biting the tongue, I usually get them in the night during a seizure. take care Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/EpilepsyApproach/
