Hi, It may very well be the keppra causing the mood changes. It is listed as one side effect that could happen, and if it does, it says to notify doctor. It is more likely to happen if the medicine was given right away at the highest dose, instead of tapering up. My daughter is doing well on keppra, but she had bad, bad reactions to dilantin, lamictal, and zonegran which were tried first(rashes, sores, infections, fevers). It was a nightmare, and I had to speak up and demand that I wanted to change from these meds each time, the docs wanted to 'wait and see', kind of thing...She started keppra at 500mg a night for 5 days, then 500morn/500night for a week, then add 500mg a week until full dose(2000mg daily). Parents use your gut, if it doesn't seem right to stay on med, demand a change or change doctors. There is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion! Go thru your insurance to find another neuro asap before doing the psychiatrist thing. Be bold, be strong, go with your parental instincts.

when keppra was introduced we did wean on to it.... 250 1xday for 1 week, then 2x a day for a week, then 3x a day for a week, then 500 2x a day ..

I have to admit,, since thursday it seems like the mood of being sad has lifted.... it's almost 2 weeks to the day of being on 500 2x a day.  and also since her cycle....maybe the side effects lift after the body adjust.  I am going to try the vitamin b 6 like getnbetr suggested.  what is biotin?  also what about b 12?

she needs to gain weight she is 5 -7 and weights 98 lbs.  that we think was from the topamax and also her brother is 6ft and weighs about 130  so it's sorta genetic also...

I also pray alot especially during med changes as it can be very tedious~~~~~  she hates changing....

pj###i used to have major problems keeping weight on in general, i'm 5'5" and would go under 100 frequently. i had problems with appetite, what helped was drinking ensure plus(i think i tastes better than the regular ensure) it helps with the extra nutrients AND calories! just make sure it's a supplement and not a replacement for food. if they hate the taste you could probably try using it to make a smootie/shake or something. that was the best help i got for either maintaining or gaining weight.-basil basil6466@yahoo.com
