hello!

I am on Keppra, as well as Trileptal.  My doctor put me on Zoloft to balance the "down" side of it all.  I've never had a real depressed emotion, or a weight gaining problem with either of these.  I am a fairly active person though.

My worries concern my 7 yr old daughter, she just had her first seizure on Saturday, May 14.  She had two small CP, each lasting about four minutes, then went into a dead stare, completly gone CP that lasted ten minutes.  I've never had one that went that long.

Any way, my daughter is now on Keppra, today is her second day.  Since her first dose yesturday she has been driving everyone crazy.  She has been like a wild horse just let out of a cage.  I wander what all side effects it has on children.  Like I said, no real problems for me, but what can it do to her?

I just hope it can keep her safe and not hurt her.

to: mak1123my son just was released from a 2 week hospital stay after a new onset epilepsy. he suffered from 100's of myoclonic and atonic seizures a day and then had his first grand mal which was severe. he is on depakote and keppra. i noticed too when they started the keppra he was wild and out of control (very uncharacteristic for him). he was eventually raised to 1750 mg a day which i believe became toxic for him (throwing up and sleeping all day with slurred speech). Thank god we were still in the hospital. He is now on 500mg 3 x's a day (1500 total) and 125 mg of dpekote am and 250mg depakote pm. it seems to work. he is now 2 days seizure free and more controllable. still a little wild but not as much. he does complain that his eyes get "foggy" and of headaches. we have our first follow up with the neuro in a few days and am anxious to see if the eeg is normal. let me know how you continue to do with the keppra, as i have read some horrible thingsa about it. all i know is depakote alone did not stop the seizures at all...only minimized the length. and it took a week for keppra to start working. they may have to play with the dose to find a good level for you. good luck

Keppra was terrible. I took it for about 8 months and gained nearly 70 pounds. I would have violent mood swings--go from laughing and on top of the world to screaming and crying uncontrollably to anxiety attacks, begging my husband to take me to the ER, because I just knew I was dying. And my seizures were still uncontrolled. When I finally got off Keppra and started Topomax I felt so much better and the weight started coming off too.
