Just curious to know how the switch from Depakote turned out.  I came off Depakote myself two years ago - to Topamax.  It took almost eight weeks to titrate up the top. and wean off the dep.  Only side effect was major weight loss that I had put on from nearly twenty years of Depakote therapy.  Hope you saw similar benefit.  Like you, I am now on Zonegran.  Hope all is well.

First of all, I am still on Depakote, and not sure why I am. I was allergic to a lot of the seizure medications that I was first placed on back in 1996 when I had brain surgery, but had no allergic to the Depakote. I have however had a considerable weight gain that has made my life very unpleasant at times. My doctor explained to me early on that I might gain some extra weight, but it is to the point of being  unhealthy. The reason I have never switched meds is because my doctor said that if I had another allergic reaction, it would just mean starting over, getting my meds back where they need to be. I have been very lucky and have not had a seizure in two years, and not sure if I want to risk having one. All my seizures have been grand-mals, and I'm sure you all know how those feel. Could anyone that was taking Depakote and was switched to something else, let me know why you were switched.

Thanks Again

My switch was because of the weight gain.  I'm a 5'10" guy and weighed well over 260 lbs. on the Depakote and had all the bad cholesterol and beginning high blood pressure that accompanies being big.  Within six months of the switch I was down to 175 lbs. and all blood levels, etc were back to normal.  Some of the weight loss was due to Topamax, but not all.  Back in colloege I came off Depakote for six months and was on nothing during that time.  I lost about 40 lbs. then by exercising and eating right.  I always try to keep in mind that I need to treat the entire body, not just the brain.  My doctor works with me to weigh the best option for my seizures, lifestyle, etc.  Hope this helps.  Good luck making your decision.
