Do i have epilepsy?

Mon, 10/18/2004 - 16:09
Hi!I recently have had an inncedent which may be the cause of epilepsy. I'm not sure whether i have it or not, and was wondering if anyone could help?I am 17, and ever since i was very young, around 5 or 6, i have had 'miagrian seizures'. These seizures are totally mental. This would always happen before i got to sleep, or when i just woke up. I have had minor shaking, but the main symptoms are like explosions in my brain. i hear voices, see things, and get very very confused. I can't remember what i'm doing, and everything i hear is in fast forward. Its sort of like all the sounds i interpret are in a 'chip-munk' voice. It was very very scary when i was young, but by the time i had reached around 10, my parents noticed them and i was rushed to a doctor. He first was sure they were symptoms of epilepsy, and i was taken to have an EEG. this came out clear, and we heard nothing of it.I'm now 17, and recently have had a fit. I was coming back from a 'festival' and had got hyponotised. I came out of it pretty confused, but went on with my day. That following night, i went back to a friends house, and they were smoking weed. I didn't smoke any, but i breathed some of there second hand smoke in and couldn't stop vicously coughing for about 20 minutes. After i felt really really woozy and i couldn't see well because i had black dots in my vision. I have smoked weed in the past, and have been fine. When i got home, i went straight to bed, and this is when i had a fit. I violently shook all over from my head to my toes. A few people had to hold me down so i wouldn't hit my head. I kept waking up and passing out every few mintues. Everytime i woke up, i couldn't hear well, and couldn't concerntrate at all! I would forget what i was saying half way through sentences, and i couldn't respond to questions because i would forget them in seconds. The most scariest things were, was that i couldn't talk. I could only talk really retarded. Really slow and slurred. It sounded like i had a stroke. I also couldn't move my arms or legs, and they would just stop in mid air and i couldn't move them. It felt as if my head wasn't attached to my body because i couldn't feel anything. I also kept having flashs, and would stare into nothingness. My pupils were fully dialated (my friends said i had jet black eyes) and i couldn't keep my eyes in one position. I couldn't stop them from either rolling back in my head, or crossing them. It was so hard to focus. My friends also said my breathe smelt like tea. This fit lasted 3 hours, and at the end, i feel alseep. The next day i was exhausted! I slept all day, and my body felt like lead. I was still confused and couldn't remember too much about the night before.I haven't told my parents because i'm scared it may have been the pot, but i also have my doubts about the hypnoses. Can anyone help? I'm sorry about the big story, but i am trying to explian everything in as much detail as possible.Thank you so muchAshley

I have had Migraines ever since I had Meningitis in 95.  We never really put the two together.

I was started on Tegretol XR in Jan of 2001 because my doc witnessed a seizrue in her office.  She actually waited for me to have 3 of them before medicating me.

You could be experenceing Complex prtial seizures that eveolve into seondarily generalized TCs.

THey look exactly the same as a primary generalized TC, except that a secondarioy one will have strange sensations, feelings, hear things, hear voices, bells etc.  You will also smell something, or taste something etc.

You may have strange emotions that are out of tucvh with the current situation etc.

I would bet on you having partial seizures and the clinical symptomology is occuring at such a fast rate it is missed until it becomes generalized.

I have TLE and have the 3 seizure types that go with it--Simple Partial, Complex, Partial, and Secondarily Generlaized Tonic Clonic.

I was also put in the EMU for a VEEG this March for pre-surgery testing that I passed all of, and they uncovered absence, and myoclonic as well.  Both of them are generalied seizrues.

People who have epilepsy, should NOT smoke cigarettes, be somewhere that they can in hale it, do any sort of drugs  that are illegal, such as weed.  It stimulates the brain and can cause seizures.  It can cause an increase in frequency, severity, and a high risk for status epilepticus, a life threatening medical problem that needs to be addressed ASAP.

That is why they warn against giving people with seizures any kind of CNS stimulant to mak them focus better.  IT just turns everything upside down.

You need to get to see a neuro if you haven't already  Hving a seizure problem is like playing with fire if you leave it untreated.

When i was about 10 i was taken off epilem with no seizures for about 4 years after that. When i was i was young I had grand mal seizures with major shaking, zoning out and fainting after not eating for a while and being over tired. When i was on epilem my hair grew really quickly on my arms. Now im 15 and the doctor put me on depakin chrono because i had proven results with epilem. he wasnt sure that i have epilepsy but it made me feel incredibly better. I had two eeg, one sleeping one awake and they both turned out normal. So do i have epilepsy or what if the medicine is working? paddy.

Hi Ashley I have never heard of such siezures, my epilepsy are complex partial siezures and I think it was the pot. Because anybody I've ever talked to said any time they've ever smoked it they felt like they were in another world. and just because you didn't smoke it dosn't mean you didn't absorb it. Second hand smoke is just as dangerous. So thats what I think got you. and my personal opinion is you should sit your parents down and tell them so it can help. I've had these sitiations too. I know it isn't easy, but I still told 'em the truth (and that's what u should do). =) Good luck figureing it all out.
