Living arrangements while on disability?

Sun, 12/01/2013 - 17:26

I have catamenial epilepsy, so I have seizures on average about once a month. They are grand mal seizures, sometimes just in bed resulting in extra exhaustion and a bit tongue, but sometimes a busted up face and a trip to the hospital. My boyfriend and I, who were living together, broke up and now... Now I don't know what to do. I'm on disability making $700 a month and have no idea how to find a living situation that will keep me safe that I can afford. I just... What do I do? My parents are out of the picture and my friends are all in transitional places in their lives, getting married, on campus in grad school, etc etc, so they're out too. Are there any assistance programs out there for situations like this?

Hi, I think it depends on where you live. If  you are in a bigger city there may be some kind of help. Sounds like you need to see about finding a room mate maybe. You might not want to live alone with the seizures you have anyhow-so someone to share rent would be good. I wish I could help more, but that's all I thought of.

Hi,

Just wondering, what country do you live in? Reason I ask is it seems majority of people here are in the United States, while I live in Ontario, Canada.  I could give ya some suggestions for Ontario, but there always seems to be differences.

This will seem scattered because I'm getting tired from a long day at work but here are a few ideas of places that may help out

-Talk to epilepsy foundation

-Talk to Rent Bank / Lutherwood Employment & Housing Services for your city.

-Look into Trillium Medical, if ya don't have medical coverage and OHIP doesn't cover it.

And on that note, sleep awaits.

I am, in fact, in the United States. I've got medical coverage and through my own digging, found some rent assistance (woo! Section 8 housing vouchers!). That being said, I still have no idea what I'm going to do in regards to a roommate. I'm going to look into this epilepsy foundation of which you speak, because I've been to their website, but had no idea there was a way to actually communicate with them directly. Maybe it's a North Carolina thing. Oh, the things we learn together. Thank you so much for your advice, I'm going to tuck it away and keep it safe. I was born in Canada (Ontario!) and moving back has always been an option if my health care here fell through, and now I have the guidelines for what to look into for moving back, so thank you!
