November (in what year?)

Mon, 11/25/2013 - 12:15

Does anyone have any knowledge as for what year November was actually declared as the epilepsy awareness month in the United States? I've been spending time searching the Internet for answers to my question, but have not come across anything yet.

As far as the year I can not say. I do know that there werew many different names for agencies, assocoations and foundations back in the 1970's. I live in Dallas and I got assistance from the Dallas Epilepsy Association. The EFA back then was only in one state.

The DEA had been doing walks around WhiteROck Lake for years as a way to get funding. The main person in the DEA went to the EFA back in the early 1980's and the EFA might have had an office in DC but they still hadn't gotten to all the states yet. If they got the National awareness started then it is possiable but it would not really be completely across the country until they get to every state. Why the EFA set up shop in Houston I will not know because it is hours away fron here and their little office that is in this area does not do much to promote awareness.

Awareness has different meanings. I am aware of everything happening around me in my seizures. Does that mean the people around me are aware of epilepsy?

Epilepsy has a stigma which most other issues do not have. How did the stigma get started and what do we do the get rid of that stigma. Hell my PCP did not even know that november was Epilepsy Awareness Month. My neuro did but then a specialist generally knows what happens in his speciality

Thank you for your reply Tadzio. I did some more online searching and quickly found the answer to my question in the very first paragraph of an old.epilepsyfoundation.org PDF file, entitled 'National Epilepsy Awareness Month'.

Background: The first nationwide epilepsy public education campaign was conducted by the Epilepsy Foundation of America in June and July of 1968. In the following year, November was declared National Epilepsy Awareness Month. Since that date the observance has been recognized in most years by a White House message from the President. In 2003, the U.S. Congress passed a formal resolution declaring November as National Epilepsy Awareness Month. Here's the link that showed up in the address bar for the very PDF file that I'm referring to… http://old.epilepsyfoundation.org/newsroom/upload/Epilepsy-Month-Fact-Sheet-NEW.pdf

Hi Spike, I only find "National Epilepsy Month" and "Epilepsy Month", until Canada's "Epilepsy Awareness Month" in March 1997: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1499&dat=19701122&id=X8AcAAAAIBAJ&sjid=fn4EAAAAIBAJ&pg=5988,1202249 http://newspaperarchive.com/lethbridge-herald/1997-02-27/page-12 with "Awareness" available Nov 15, 1998 and, after Canada's month of March, Feb 27, 1997 listing: http://gonebananas.org/tag/national-epilepsy-awareness-month/ Same for "Epilepsy Month" in White House Messages, first being Carter, then Clinton, on my internet access search. http://www.epilepsyfoundation.org/resources/newsroom/pressreleases/Epilepsy-Foundation-Launches-National-Campaign-to-Raise-Epilepsy-Awareness.cfm What's the date on Bruce's cited document? I only find the Foundation's earliest as October 22, 2009: "In 1969, November was declared National Epilepsy Awareness Month as a part of a nationwide epilepsy public education campaign. Since that date, the observance has been recognized in most years by a White House message from the President. In 2003, the U.S. Congress passed a formal resolution declaring November as National Epilepsy Awareness Month." but, http://ecips.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/D?d094:704:./list/bss/d094HJ.lst:: then: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?r108:H19NO3-0044: Tadzio
