November (in what year?)

Mon, 11/25/2013 - 12:15

Does anyone have any knowledge as for what year November was actually declared as the epilepsy awareness month in the United States? I've been spending time searching the Internet for answers to my question, but have not come across anything yet.

Hi Spike, The quick search results I get ends in "snippet view", but the intermediate result of the google Ngram Viewer for "Epilepsy Awareness" (case sensitive) gives: "Working with a team of public health students who are developing an 'Epilepsy Awareness Plan' for the general public, to be implemented in November l977. RESEARCH-ABSTRACTS Information about existing technology is being..." (Plan for nationwide action on epilepsy - Volume 2 - Page 1085 (United States. Commission for the Control of Epilepsy and its Consequences - 1978)). https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=Epilepsy+Awareness&year_start=1800&year_end=2000&corpus=15&smoothing=3&share=&direct_url=t1%3B%2CEpilepsy%20Awareness%3B%2Cc0 https://www.google.com/search?q=%22epilepsy%20awareness%22&tbs=bks:1,cdr:1,cd_min:1800,cd_max:1993&lr=lang_en Trying to narrow down, mainly more later snippets (except for chance combinations): https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=Epilepsy+Awareness&year_start=1975&year_end=2000&corpus=15&smoothing=3&share=&direct_url=t1%3B%2CEpilepsy%20Awareness%3B%2Cc0 Tadzio

That could have been right but you do need to check out when the EFA got to all the states. Here in Dallas we had DEA and it was in the 1980's that Carol Cervenka went from DEA to the EFA they may have been in DC but I don't think they were in all the states

Hi Just_Joe, Some States' (etc.) posting proceedings to the internet are scattered amongst the nGram returns, such as "Journal of Proceedings of the County Legislature of the County of Rensselaer(NY)": http://books.google.com/books?id=z-5IAAAAYAAJ&q=%22epilepsy+awareness%22&dq=%22epilepsy+awareness%22&hl=en&sa=X&ei=idmWUqLDJND6kQfNmIHwCA&ved=0CFwQ6AEwBQ Reference sources are 1,900 miles distant here, so snippets the present limit. ( http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/22723226/ requires subscription for me, if that is the source of DEA, April 23, 1973, with earlier use of the word "Awareness" in the slogan). The earlier citations are better than later citations of citations, with the original source being much better than subsequent citations ("improvements" are often later added that were not in the original source). The word "Awareness" tweaks my curiosity (types of seizures of epilepsy involving consciousness, i.e., "awareness", and the failed definition of both), and the "chance" return of "teddy bear epilepsy", with those cursed teddy bears being encountered again: "LET ME DIE OF ANYTHING BUT SUFFOCATION BY THE PINK STICKY SENTIMENT EMBODIED IN THAT TEDDY BEAR": http://archive.bcaction.org/PDF/Harpers.pdf The Literal War Between: https://www.google.com/search?q=%22teddy+bear+epilepsy%22&oq=%22teddy+bear+epilepsy%22&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l2.456j0j7&sourceid=chrome&espv=210&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8 (example: "What a wonderful gift this teddy bear will make! It is LIMITED EDITION and is called the E-Teddy hand made especially in recognition of epilepsy all month long." https://en-gb.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10152025874713706&id=170564038705 AND "the 'teddy bear' sign were associated with moderate specificity for PNES" http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18617856 versus "Does the teddy bear sign predict psychogenic nonepileptic seizures?" http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23770681 The source/origin of "Breast Cancer Awareness Month", as a model, is very controversial when consciousness raises above the intoxicating glitz: http://womego.com/articles/news-issues/breaking-news/health/writing-next-chapter-people-issues-revisited?page=4 Ehrenreich's "Bright-Sided"/"Smile or Die" also overlaps in cluing to recognizing ACT's faulty concepts of "Clean Epilepsy" versus "Dirty Epilepsy" in epilepsy enhancing and/or ruining many major life activities.
