keppra and psychotic behavior

Tue, 09/09/2008 - 12:36
my daughter is 11 and just started having grand mal seizures in may 08. in june she was put on keppra 500mg twice a day. a couple weeks ago she started having  what looked like focal seizures. but the drs say its not a seizure. they think its behavioral or maybe even hallucinations. if anyone has had this happen to them please help me. i and the neurologists have taken her off but im worried that the keppra may have caused permenant damage. she also had trouble walking and needed a wheelchair to get around as i cannot carry a 106lb child!

I was put on 200o mg of Keppra and started having serious mood issues over several months that got worst and worst. I know that the drug can have serious psychological side-effects. I'm sorry to hear that this has continued to affect her. Hopefully with time it might go away. How long has it been? I know after I reduced dosage I was lethargic, slurring my speech, and literally seemed drunk to people for a little while afterwards. Perhaps she needs to heal from whatever the effects of the Keppra were on her system.

chalk me up as another in the Keppra = bad effects column me: seizures started at age 38 (after some bad hockey injuries), diagnosed with E in 2008, on phenytoin.. then in 2010 also started levetiracetam (Keppra) and experienced one period soon thereafter I can only describe as literally "Mind-Blowing".. a brief psychotic period that's still like a smudge of dreamlike recollections. I'm not sure what "I" was from the outside, from an observer's standpoint, but from "my" standpoint levetiracetam turned my mind into a nightmare of melted fragment-horror. once an issue arises and the doctor says nothing more but to "bump up the Keppra dose", I say leave that doctor immediately and get off the Keppra ASAP. Keppra/lev. has a known history of causing these types of problems. If a doctor doesn't know that, or isn't able to consider the Keppra as problematic, as an issue, when its use is coincidental with the arising of a mood issue - then that doctor is not worth your time, or probably the paper his degrees are printed on, and has probably a vested interest of some sort in being a Keppra advocate. it is my opinion that this issue should definitely be addressed if there is any co-incidence of Keppra use with sudden psychotic behavior since being taken off levetiracetam I've been put on lamotrigine

I was put on keppra for 1 week and was not even safe to be around. Severe rage issues. I had to stop myself from punching a fellow church member sitting behind me because he breathed on my neck. I almost lost it. I in visioned myself standing up on the pew and knocking this guys head off with one big sucker punch. I had to get up and leave the sermon. I had to stop keppra immediately. Then I got brain shocks that have still not gone away. It's been a year now and still have brain shocks every 10-15 seconds. There isn't anything they can do for them cause they can't see them on an EEG. I took an 8 day EEG video monitoring and the found zero abnormalities. I had 27 probes glued to my scalp the entire time hooked to 8 feet of wire and it was just enough slack to reach the bathroom. Be very careful with keppra. It's a very dangerous drug and can ruin your life. I've lost my career my house and praise the lord my wife is very supportive and helpful and understanding. I have a very short memory now. I can lose you in the middle of a conversation. I'll be talking to you and just totally lose it and my train of thought. It's embarrassing. I do not recommend this drug to anybody. I have about 10 seconds of concentration just long enough time to be hit with a multiple series of brain zaps. It's like getting shocked by an electrical outlet but right in my brain. I never heard of such a thing until I did research on them. They come from withdrawl of those types of meds. FYI be very careful
