Keppra XR - Generic Version

Mon, 10/10/2011 - 14:28

I just took some prescriptions to be refilled, including one for Keppra XR.  My pharmacist informed me that a new generic version of Keppra XR just came out.  Normally, my neurologist only wants me to use the brand due to differences in fillers that have caused break through seizures in some patients.  Of course, there is a huge cost difference.  I switched from regular Keppra to Keppra XR when the Keppra generic came out because of this.  It worked out well as the XR version actually works better for me.

Does anyone have any experience with Keppra XR generic?

I wouldn't touch any generic AED! On 4/26/13 I found out how lucky I was to have taken five days of personal medicine along with me to a hospital to have a leg operation, I kept the real things with me. Even though they attempted at 10pm to provide me with a generic version of Keppra XR, at 7pm I'd took my brand name ones. I take 1500mgs. at both 7am and 7pm which is twice daily, I know 3000mgs only needs to be taken once a day.. I'd rather pay the difference in cost for brand name than generic crap. Cause of the quality difference there's a different price. Timothy Baldwin

As has been pointed out by others be cautious about generic AEDs.  Check manufacturers with your pharmacist. You may find one that works for you.

With regard to Keppra, I've been on both the brand name and a generic. With both I experienced very high hostility and aggressiveness within about 2 weeks. On the brand name I was able to get off of it before any other problems came up. But on the the generic I ended up in jail.

I can't say the saving in prescription cost is worth it.
