Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

I was wondering if anybody else has had issues with seizures while playing sports when their adrenaline is pumping. I had a seizure at my fist softball game of the season last week and it has been almost since last summer when I had a seizure that was also at a softball game? My first thought was because I was dehydrated but this time we had just started playing and I had plenty to drink all day.

I am wondering if adrenaline has anything to do with my seizures during softball, I don't play any other team sports so I don't have any other times where I have my adrenaline pumping or a little anxiety. Anybody else have any experience with something similar t this, what are your thoughts?

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

Actually, after you play the game, you may be experiencing adrenal fatigue.  Adrenal fatigue often develops after periods of intense or lengthy physical or emotional stress, when overstimulation of the glands leave them unable to meet your body's needs.

Symptoms include:

* excessive fatigue and exhaustion
* feeling rundown or overwhelmed
* craving salty and sweet foods
* low stamina, slow to recover from exercise
* consistent low blood pressure
* extreme sensitivity to change in body temperature

Or it could be the stress related to the competition and winning that triggers a seizure.   Stress can increase cortisol, known as “the stress hormone” because cortisol is secreted in higher levels during the body’s “fight or flight” response.  And that's responsible for several stress-related changes in the body which also may influence seizure activity.

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

Thank you for your response!! It is actually somewhat strange that I went about six months between seizures and then the first game I play in I have a seizure. I have had a few seizures since that night and have not felt like myself since then. I just think there is something my body is doing that is triggering the seizures.

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

I think I would start with a good blood work-up to eliminate or diagnose adrenal fatigue. (Those tests are best recommended by an endocrinologst who knows exactly what to order...unless you tell your internist exactly what the problem is that you need diagnosed.)

If those tests come out negative, I would recommend you see a neurologist.  For a Comprehensive List of GOOD Neurologists, Epileptologists, and Neurosurgeons, as recommended by members of the EFA eforum, based upon positive personal experience, go to  http://my.epilepsy.com/node/985817  Let me know how you do and if you need any more recommendations...     Phylis Feiner Johnson   www.epilepsytalk.com

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

Hi Phylis,

Actually, if you read up Medical Texts, 'Adrenal Fatigue' is not an acceptable diagnosis per se. I was given a run-through of all adrenal-tests because the endocrinologists (yeah a whole team of them!) were quite convinced my adrenals were out of order.

Oh forget medical tests, here, a reply from a MayoClinic doc regarding this condition: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/adrenal-fatigue/AN01583

I happen to have one side of my adrenals slightly bigger than the other, and one particular hormone was running amok in my body. So Ive been thrugh the mill being tested for adrenal issues.

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

I have often thought this for myself. I have found fatigue and lack of sleep a big issue. All I need at that point is some sort of emotional trigger and it wont stop. This may come from violent movie, my life, accident - as you say tripping over something accidentally - all of these factors producing the start of the seizure.

It has gotten worse as I have aged and around pregnancy.

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

Good idea to create a list of your seizure triggers. I have taken this on board myself to have a look at exactly what is making these things.

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

Please read all my comments - Beta Blocker & ENZO: Proffessional (google the ENZO: Proffessional Dossie) Interesting reading on the case studies. The Beta Blocker has stopped everything after three & a half years of seizures. I have muli triggers and everything has stopped dead in it's tracks since I started taking them. If I miss just one dose it's all back tho. I feel fresh, alive and very active again, all the fatigue has gone and I sleep well every night. I've had no more seizures from emotional triggering while on these tablets. TV and Movies have loud music with high pitch (strings)are the worst for me and very low rumbling makes me shake. If it gets to my head I would seizure. Period time and night when tired or just doing too much anytime would start the trumers or movements, then shaking and finally a seizure. As I said, all stop on BETA BLOCKER - for me no side effects and out of your system with 8 or 12 hours depending on the dose. I take half morning, afternoon and night each tablet 50mg. It is used for heart problems and very effective for people with is disorder too. See your Cardiologist as they see more people with this than a GP and they are specialists, as for me they all thought I had pseudoseizuers.

A misdiagnosis and I had no life. Now I do.

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

I was tested and confirmed with one side of my adrenal slightly bigger than the other producing double adrenaline. Blood test and scan picked it up. I was in 24/7 hour flight fight response and my triggers were light, sound, pain, surprise, stress of any kind on my body or mind and I had fatigue all the time. The Beta Blocker has returned me back to normal health with no side effects. I also take Enzo: Professional to help my brain recover from all the seizures and head injury from the falls - 2/caps aday morning. I am very alert, active and seizure free! I was told my body was over adrenalized and I did not have epilepsy therefore I was not placed on any drugs for epilepsy. In the begaining all the tests came back negative to everything the GP's tested and a misdiagnosis of Pseudoseizues or Psychogenic nonepilepic seizuers. I was lucky I meet a great man, a Cardioloist who really listened and within 10 mins of our first meeting, said "I think I know what's wrong with you" pulled out his script pad and said "take these straight away and within one hour you will be feeling much better." Also said "this would have damage your heart if left untreated" Told my husband and I "it wasn't a matter of IF but WHEN you will die by misadventure if this continued." I rang the cariologist the next day to say I felt much better and then I had all the tests which confirmed his orginal diagnoses within 4 weeks of our first meeting. Three and half years of seizures daily and weekly. I have ZERO seizures - I was put on Beta Blocker 2011 and I haven't looked back...I have my life back and my family have there mother and wife again...

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

There's a whole lot of triggers that could be at play here.  For a list of Common Epilepsy Triggers, go to:  http://epilepsytalk.com/2010/03/02/common-epilepsy-triggers/

In the meantime, it might be useful for you to keep a seizure diary noting what happens before your seizures, as well as how you feel afterwards.  That might help your doc better understand what you're going through.     Phylis Feiner Johnson   www.epilepsytalk.com

Did you hydrate yourself with any drinks containg aspartame?

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

I have figured out that for my son, who has had seizures during basketball games, tae kwon do, and swim team practice, that he hyperventilates.  Not so much as to pass out, but enough to mess up the oxygen/CO2 balance in his brain, and that appears to be a trigger for him.  When he stops and wears a high quality dusk mask (like breathing into a paper bag) he has fewer problems.

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

me being a big time adrenaline junkie my self. yes adrenaline can coz seizures. i had first one while playing basket ball at a church convention.

i say go for it just take care of your self.

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

I've had the same exact thing happen (in fact, in the same exact sport).  I had seizures during softball, baseball and basketball.  And it seemed the seizures would come on whenever something particularly adrenaline-necessary kicked in.  Like say, scoring a basket in basketball or getting a hit in softball/baseball.  Major events would spike the adrenaline.

Many times, I would get a hit in a softball game and by the time I reached second base, I'd be down for the count (complex partial seizure, never a gran mal).  It's strange... these episodes only happened during team sports where I was competing - never in solo workouts at the gym.  I'm fairly certain mine weren't cases of dehydration, especially the episodes during basketball (all games were played indoors with plenty of water taken in).  Your case sounds very, very similar to my own.

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

Others here have posted success using beta blockers to control adrenaline fueled seizures.  I was wondering if you have tried that?  Your circumstances seem exactly like my sons.

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

At age 14 I developed epilepsy that is very similar to what you are describing. The first grand mal occurred when I jumped into a pool. Medication (Keppra and Trileptal) have kept the "surprise" or "adrenaline" seizures to minor eye-blinking and temporary loss of vocal control. I am now 27, and for the last year I finally kept a seizure journal. Seizures occurred about once a week, here's a list of things that started them:

Replacing filter on engine
Dropped a plate
Juggled a plate
Softball
Softball
Almost tripped getting out of the shower
Softball
Softball
Softball
Softball
Tripped on a piece of wood, caught self
Surprise in a movie
Surprise in a movie
Banging curtains
Climbing Rocks
Driving up driveway, person popped out of the porch into way
Surprise shot by Nerf Gun
Caught self slipping on ice
Plastic bag broke while carrying it
Tripped coming up the stairs
Rolled a strike, got excited
Knocked down playing Musical Chairs
Tipped over a cup at dinner

Reading this makes me realized how clumsy I can be.

Occasionally, if I forget my pills, they'll occur on their own, but for the most part every seizure is triggered and occurs instantly following the event. I hope this helps someone. It's nice (in a weird way) to know that this occurs to other people too.

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

All sounds similar to my situation  I am on Beta Blocker and all seizures have now stopped. I was informed these seizures are not true epilepsy seizures rather non epilepsy seizures therefore I have never been placed on any epilepsy drugs. I take beta blocker 3 times a day morning, afternoon and night. I am rested, relaxed and my energy has returned to normal and so has my drivers licence after passing a stress test...

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

To add on to my earlier post, some of these occur when I am otherwise completely relaxed, such as at dinner and I knock over a cup. Additionally, they do occur unprovoked periodically. An MRI showed nothing noticeable, but an EEG showed abnormal temporal lobe activity (I believe that's what they said, I'd have to check the records again). Anywho, boo epilepsy!

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

For me yes - I take Beta Blocker and that has stopped the seizures totally.

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

Interesting, where would one find these?

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

Cardiologist prescribed this after he diagnosed me
with an adrenaline disorder.

I produce twice as much adrenaline as a normal
person therefore my heart is at risk for damage.

Problem solved, no cure only management for the rest of my life. I now have my drivers licence back after passing a stress test.
I take my meds 3 times a day. Morning, afternoon and night, half a 50mg tablet

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

My son seems to have nearly identical symptoms as some of you.  Seizures are always brought on by sports and gym class.  Not the excercise component, because it is often within the first 30 seconds of soccer games.  Adrenaline seems to always be involved.  What specific adrenaline disorder were you diagnosed with, and what beta blocker are you taking?

Thanks

Re: Can Adrenaline cause seizures?

Brad, I have not played any sports over the past few years due to a torn ACL. I have since had some simple partial seizures so I am thinking the adrenaline is causing the seizures but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a trigger. Good luck with your son, I hope you find something that can help him!
