Does Epilepsy ever totally go away?

Fri, 04/02/2004 - 01:57
I've read that it does. But I have my own theory on it. I believe that Epilepsy is like a Volcano – it can lie dormant for a very long time and then raise its ugly head again. We all know that some Volcanoes have been dormant for thousands of years but that they can erupt again any day. Now because us humans don't live for that long, some epilepsy may remain dormant for our whole life and others are not so lucky. I've read a few stories when the people have gone 20 years with no seizures or medication and then bang they start having seizures again and need to be put back on medication – now I'm sure they thought that they didn't have it any more! I myself have gone 7 years (between 7 and 14) without any seizures or meds and then start having them and needing meds again. I recently had another seizure my first since 1997 although that was triggered by a drug so I'm just waiting to see if that's all it was. I use to wear a Medic Alert Bracelet before and are going to start wearing it again when I get my replacement one as I lost my first one – I think everyone who has a history of seizures should wear one cause you just never know when you may have another one

I like the comment too about epilepsy being like a volcano. I started to have grand mal seizures in my sleep 2 years ago in 2009 and I still have them. Doctors have only told me I have a seizure disorder and they never told me what is causing my seizures or what kind or type they are. I believe I have Nocturnal Seizure Disorder and I used to take Dilantin 100 mg 2xaday, then it was changed to Phenytoin 100 mg 2xaday. I really hated taking the med. because I would be sick at least 5-10 times a day every month like I had the stomach flu, and finally I decided to get off my meds. So I slowly weaned myself off them and now I am not taking any meds for my seizures. I feel so much better, more clear headed, I feel better mentally and physically. I hardly get stomach flu like symptoms anymore but I still have seizures. My last seizure was last month and to date I have had 16 seizures that I know of. I have about 1 seizure once a month. With my experience with my seiz. meds, and how sick I felt mentally and physically, I would rather have seizures then take the damn meds. All seiz. meds are bad and cause memory loss, mood changes, personality changes, and are just not good all around.

I had Pettmail Seizures when I was a chimd all the way up to the age of 13 got took off my medicine witch was tegratol and havent really had any since then I had a handful of granmal seisures along with the petimal ones. But one day it was over and I was glad they went away. But now I'm having some symptoms that seem awfully close to what i use to have during my seizures as a kid. My heart rate goes up and my breathing is harder and my hand and legs and teeth start to shake and I tense up on the strong ones. Ive had about 4 so far in a 5 day period. And afterwards I have a server migraine and I'm completely tired and I breath heavy. The little ones inknkw what hspping the couple big ones I only remember a few things from it. So any thoights on westher or bit this may be my epilepsy coming back full force?
