Keppra and Alcohol

Mon, 02/04/2008 - 13:49

I am a healthy 28 year old male who just had his first 2 seizures on consecutive days.  I went to the hospital and had an MRI and an EEG.  The EEG came back abnormal so the DR. put me on Keppra 1000mg a day.  I am a social drinker who drinks regularly.  The Doctor said I shouldn't drink and if I do I can only have one drink.  Is this true?  I am not an alcoholic but the thought of never being able to get drunk again is fairly upsetting to me.  Does anyone have any advice?  What happens if I do drink?

 Thanks

Hey I'm a 17 year old male. In the past 3 weeks I've had 2 seizures, the first two I've ever had. When at the hospital I took an CT scan and an EEG both of which came back normal. Unable to determine why I had these seizures the drs prescribed me to take Keppra. I realize I'm not legal drinking age, so save me the guilt trip. I go to parties just about every weekend and while getting drunk isn't the most important thing to me, considering I still have my senior year of high school and college left, not being able to ever drink again upsets me. So if anyone could shed some light on how to safely mix alcohol and Kepptra thatd be greatly appreciated.

Please note: I'm not a medical doctor My suggestion would be to take a scientific approach. Record how many seizures you have per day, or per week, what you were doing the day you had a seizure, and other details that might be relevant. If you have a beer, record how you feel the next day, etc. Don't have too many drinks at once, eat something, and if you take the medicine at night, wait an hour or two after you've had a drink. I've been on Keppra for about 3 years, in combination with Trileptal. I do have a drink a few times a week and I have not had a seizure. Other comments on this topic prove that even one drink can prompt a seizure for some Keppra users. Since Keppra is a relatively new drug, long-term side effects of drinking while on the drug aren't readily available. If you feel that the risk of a seizure due to alcohol is too great, then don't have a drink at all. Everyone's brain is different, so figure out what works for you. I make every attempt to live my life without letting epilepsy get in the way. I've learned what works and what does not work, as you will. You are 17, you'll make mistakes, but the fact that you chose to ask how other people deal with the temptation of alcohol proves that you are interested in preserving your health.
