topamax and weight loss

Fri, 09/15/2006 - 21:59
Has anyone or have someone that experienced that Topamax side effects include weight loss. If so, is there anything being done to gain weight. My Alexia, 16 is underweight and is being teased at school. She weighs 93 pounds (called aneorxia) and I am reassuring her that she is just fine and it is one of the side effects. karen

My neurologyst put me on many seizure meds for migraines before topamax and last year my pcp took me off it because I was so sick I had to be admitted to the ER.  Now let me first start by saying that I was on Depakote and it made me gain upwards 25 or so pounds even though I was fiercely watching my intake and exercising like mad.  Anyway, it seems I had caught some 24 hour bug but my liver functions were so bad and white count too that they immediately took me off all meds.  So at that point I'm off the Depakote and on nothing for migraines.  Once I was clear he put me on Topamax.  As my dosage increased to - I think around 150mg over the course of 24hr - I only had slight vision flurries but a decrease of 25/50mg took care of that.  I also got the added benefit of loosing the Depakote weight.

Now, the reason I responded to your post:  I have ALWAYS had stomach trouble and so my pcp had given me an rx of phenergan &/or promethazine.  The are what are commonly given in hospitals in IV's to calm upset stomaches and in some meds to do the same.  Or if you have the stomach flu you can even get them in topical or (icK) suppistories.  I hope this helps.  If not, here is something else.  I got another case of stomach something (I have kids) and so being the cautionary creature my dr is, I got a blood test and the panels happened to be close to low so she had me stop all meds.  I was ....upset.  (At this point not only had i been given a diet wonder but more importantly I had next to NO MIGRAINES.  I can't even remember when the last time I had been able to say that was).  Anyway, I now no longer seem to have the weight loss wonder drug but still seem to have the migraine treatment and that was really what I went looking for.

Good luck!

I've been on topamax numerous times because really, really it works for me but sometimes the side effects are too much for me. .'m 5'5 and have always hovered around 100 lbs... I don't have an eating disorder, and I've just always been thin. Usually with a new round of top I could expect to lose 5-10 lbs, and but that's me. I my weight loss came from a significantly decreased appetite and extreme nausea. What I started to do was drink at least two large green smoothies a day with added protein powder. The this gave me extra calories and nutrition in case the nausea was too much to be able to eat. The I also began drinking 2-4 ensure plus a day to add more nutrition and calories and to counter weight loss.
