Keppra XR - Generic Version

Mon, 10/10/2011 - 14:28

I just took some prescriptions to be refilled, including one for Keppra XR.  My pharmacist informed me that a new generic version of Keppra XR just came out.  Normally, my neurologist only wants me to use the brand due to differences in fillers that have caused break through seizures in some patients.  Of course, there is a huge cost difference.  I switched from regular Keppra to Keppra XR when the Keppra generic came out because of this.  It worked out well as the XR version actually works better for me.

Does anyone have any experience with Keppra XR generic?

I actually came on here to ask the same question (:    Our situation is exact! Hopefully someone will

respond after having the generic experience! Do we mess with a change if the XR is working??? Its

tempting with that cost difference isnt it...

My Dr. decided to keep me on the brand - no big surprise.  However, I am on a high deductible healtch care plan at work and have a health care savings account (HSA.)  Usually, I have to pay full price for my first prescription or two at the beginning of the year, and then my deductible is met, and after that, I just use the HSA funds to pick up the price of the brand meds.  It's really been helpful to have the HSA.

I was on a regular health insurance program before, and was nervous about switching to the high deductible plan, but it's cheaper, and I can put the savings into the HSA (plus some extra.)  I'd really encourage anyone who is considering switching to such a plan to do the math and give it a try.  You can probably switch back if you don't like it.

Anyway, maybe these companies putting out the generics will get smart and use the exact fillers the brand companies use, if they can.  It sure would be nice to pay the generic prices.

Hi my husband was put on gen Keppra XR about two weeks ago.  This is the only pill he has ever taken though.  We are just recently diagnosed with complex partial seizures.  There is two main side effects that we are dealing with.  1:  He's tired all of the time but he has trouble staying asleep at night 2: He is irritated very easily.  This is the main one of concern because he is hard to be around sometimes because everything makes him mad.  Our dr wants us to give it two more weeks before we start looking at other med options.
