simple partial seizures and headaches?

Wed, 03/16/2011 - 17:37
I was diagnosed with simple partial seizures a few years ago. During the seizures I would have headaches. Since going on keppra, the seizure symptoms have gone away, but I have been suffering from chronic debilitating headaches for years! The last 2 times I have had the headaches, some of my weirder seizure symptoms presented themselves. I am beginning to think the headaches are part of the seizures and that the seizures were never fully under control, but my neuro seems to think differently. He thinks the headaches are from myofascial pain syndrome or cervical dystonia...but I think their occurrences are too coincidental to be an independent issue. Does anyone know if migraines and/or headaches can be a part of these seizures? If so, what can I do about it. I've been on keppra 1000 mgs 2 times per day with 100 mgs of topamax, but still had the headaches. I am currently on 500 mgs keppra twice a day without the topamax.

If he's having seizures he needs to see a neurologist. If he is only having the simple partials, it isn't worth running to the ER. No they are not fun, but they are not something to go the the ER for. He should be on seizure medications to try to stop the seizures. The best thing to do on your part is to let him rest. Seizures wipe out your energy and I'd get mad if I had to go to the ER everytime I had a SPS, BUT I wouldn't b mad to go to a neuro cuz that is their specialty. SPS's come in clusters, and their onset is in a persons sleep, so what he is experiencing is normal. Don't worry. He's gonna be tired. Let him sleep.

I have migrane like headaches after the simple partial. The length of time they last is dependant on the severity of the seizure. I usually fall asleep and the headache is much better or gone after sleeping 2-5 hrs. I usually feel the pain over/behind one or both eyes then moving to the middle of forehead. Log this in your seizure diary to help your doctor understand. I have found doctors who believe this and ones who don't. My Dr. at Utah Epilepsy Ctr in SLC said it was "after seizure". If you can get someone to drive you I highly reccommend you go to an Epilepsy Ctr. Its the only place I wasn't treated like a crazy person seeking attention.
