Absence Seizures for Adults?

Tue, 09/25/2007 - 01:20
Hello, I'm new I'm a 21 year old and I started noticing that I was "blanking out" oddly a couple of years ago Finally after 2 years, I see a doctor, he tells me I might have "Absence Seizures" and he referred me a Nuerologist tells me I have Complex Partial Seizures (without testing me or anything at all) but my Seizures are not Several minutes long, they are only about 10 seconds and I keep telling myself I have Absence Seizures, but Im an adult Here's how seizure is: A sudden vertigo/dizziness like trance, only lasting about 5-10 seconds, I forget my surroundings for a second, they happen one or two days a week, up to 12 times a day and some weeks they don't happen at all and only a few times I've had a bad headache afterwards Anyone had this same problem as an Adult, can Adults get Absence Seizures?

Hi Haley, I'm glad you were finally diagnosed. Having Absence Seizures (petit mal) is no fun & it can be scary especially if you live alone like I do. I too was diagnosed as a child & on meds after my 1 & only gran mal (tonic-clonic) at age 5. I was on 2 different meds for maybe 3 yrs & then taken off. I wasn't cured though & continued to have several types of what I now know have been Absence Seizures. They continue to this day. I will be 55 this yr. Over the last year or 2 I've been having increasing neurological problems effecting more & more of my systems more & more frequently & I've noticed many types of Absence Seizures that vary from a few minutes to an hour or so to days. Now I just need my neurologist to order the tests to confirm. Having a baby is a big responsibility. I hope you remain well enough to care for a baby. My Mom had petit mal (Absence Seizures) as a child too. I never had children, but you may want to speak with a geneticist to see what the odds are that your child could inherit the trait. I wish you Peace. Jennie

Go see a neurologist right away. It turns out I was having Simple Partial seizures and they were caused by a tumor in my brain. You can either have your primary doctor suggest you a neurologist or look for one in the yellow pages. Best of luck -Michael
