Can exercise induce seizures?

Sun, 11/16/2008 - 07:00
All the doctors disagree with me because of the research out there but I gave up running last June because I had a seizure while running. I suddenly collapsed, right before I was going to cross a busy street. The doctors argue that aerobic exercise is especially good for epileptics because it normally relieves stress and depression. I agree with this but I want to be safe when getting back into it again. Once I had a small seizure on a bicycle as well. What does everyone else think? Have you had similar experiences?

     Im Margie,

I have learned to exercise moderately.  I do not exercise too much up until I get too tired.  To live a life  of moderation is my secret in life.  I have learned  to know my upcoming auras when I know Im too tired exercising.  I have done balley for 17 years and it has done me very well in recognizing auras because it has helped me to cleanse my body from all toxins ... travelling through my body.

More so, allow to comment to you exercise.   It might be too harsh for your physical system...

Hi luv_ni,  Every brain is different.  I wish it was that easy for me.  I have my partner/caregiver with me when I go to the gym, and any aerobics need to be at the end of my workout.  Both weights and aerobics cause seizures for me, but aerobics produce them faster.

Like most things, I believe it is a very individual thing. I have had epilepsy for 27 years (since I was 15 due to ecephalitis) and I have had various reactions to physical activity throughout that time. These days it seems to be more of a mental/emotional thing rather than physical that triggers my episodes. I perform in a music group, which can be pretty physically exhausting, I walk a lot, when the weather is appropriate I throw frisbee with friends, and I continue to work on lowering the stress in my life. I think that is the key--lowering the stress in one's life. But, every person is different. Google famous people with epilepsy. That can be inspiring. Did you know Prince has epilepsy?
