Can exercise induce seizures?

Sun, 11/16/2008 - 07:00
All the doctors disagree with me because of the research out there but I gave up running last June because I had a seizure while running. I suddenly collapsed, right before I was going to cross a busy street. The doctors argue that aerobic exercise is especially good for epileptics because it normally relieves stress and depression. I agree with this but I want to be safe when getting back into it again. Once I had a small seizure on a bicycle as well. What does everyone else think? Have you had similar experiences?

I am so glad I came across this discussion. Today I had to call 911 for my husband when we were out running. I came running up to him, we were only 5 min apart, and he was having a seizure on the ground. His seizures only happen when he is running and they have only happened about 5 times in his life, so I do not think he has epilepsy, but we are going to a neurologist this week to find out the cause. Anyone have any ideas why this keeps happening? This the second time in a year since we have been married that is has happened and no one can tell us why.

My son has exercize heat related seizures as well.

I don't know if your doc is right or wrong, but my son absolutely has tonic-clonic seizures induced by intense exercise. CrossFit, intense running, Assault bike - if he pushes hard into it he starts having absence seizures. If he stops he has a good chance of avoiding the big one. He has also had them with a fever and really hot showers. He has them about every 2 - 3 months.

Seizure driving laws protect the public from out of control cars. A seizure while biking or walking poses little public danger so it is allowed.
