Adderall XR and Seizure medications

Tue, 12/16/2008 - 19:07
I just went to see my doctor for my check - up and I told her of some symtoms that I have been having for a while now and she put me on the very small dose of Adderall XR, which is 5mg. I was wondering if anyone else is taking Adderall or Adderall XR with their seizure meds. I am already taking Lamictal, Keppra XR, and Klonopin. One of the side effects of this medication is possible seizures, but it is very rare. I was just wondering what others thought too.

Hi Jamie,

You didn't indicate the symptoms you were having or the dosage of seizure meds you were taking so I'm not sure why your physician prescribed the Adderall.  In my daughter's case she was and still is taking 5000 mg. of Keppra(along with all her other seizure meds) which caused her to have extreme fatigue.  At the time she was pursuing her bachelor's degree and could hardly make it through the day.  Her doctor prescribed 20 mg. Adderall XR for her to be able to concentrate and keep from being so tired.  She chose to take it only during the week to keep from getting addicted as well as having it lose it's potency.   Of course, on the weekends without the Adderall she felt like a zombie she was so tired.

I’m 44 yrs old and I started

I’m 44 yrs old and I started having seizures when I was 25. I’ve been on lamital for all these years. About 8 yrs ago for some reason I started having seizures more often and they prescribed me Kepra to take also and I became a zombie because it was to much meds. Seizure meds slow your brain down so you don’t have a seizure so all those meds will make you feel sleepy all the time. I made them take me off Kepra. I was still having about 1 seizure every month or two. Anyway a while back I started taking aderall along with my lamital and I haven’t had a seizure or any feelings of one. I honestly think the aderall may be helping mine. I had bad seizures. I would stop breathing while I was having a seizure and I would throw up when I came out of it. I know the aderall helps to keep me focused and I’m wondering if me staying focused is helping my brain and seizures. I know through the years I can sometimes keep myself from having one. When I have that feeling of a seizure coming on strong. I turn away from everyone and try to just focus on myself and not think of anything or anyone around me and it helps me from having a seizure. I will go into a seizure real quick If I try to sit there and continue talking to someone and try to act normal knowing I’m having that feeling of a seizure coming on. So in my experience I think the aderall may be keeping me focused and I’m not having seizures. I hope my answer may help someone.
