Can exercise induce seizures?

Sun, 11/16/2008 - 07:00
All the doctors disagree with me because of the research out there but I gave up running last June because I had a seizure while running. I suddenly collapsed, right before I was going to cross a busy street. The doctors argue that aerobic exercise is especially good for epileptics because it normally relieves stress and depression. I agree with this but I want to be safe when getting back into it again. Once I had a small seizure on a bicycle as well. What does everyone else think? Have you had similar experiences?

Exactly, lor.  I also think people are using faulty logic here.

I had a seizure one time when I fell asleep on the Skytrain. Considering I rode the train 2 times per day, 5 days a week, for 4 years, and usually fell asleep on it, having a seizure while on the train wasn't a total shock.

Wow, great question. I have wondered too. My 10 year old son plays many sports and I have been conerned about the same thing in this thead.

During his eeg, the rapid breathing did cause him to spike many times. I never would have believed it if I had not seen it with my own eyes on the screen. This test was the proof that we had a child with epilepsy, and the more I thought about it...exersize may cause a seizure but he still needs to be a kid. Now that we know his cues and time frame for possible seizures, I feel better. Does that mean I'm not worried about football walk-throughs this summer? Of course, but what can you do...not encourage an active lifestyle? No way. I'm hoping he sees epilepsy is just part of his life now, and to still enjoy life.

I've haven't had one while exercising, mine are usually brought on by lack of sleep and stress.  How much are you exercising?
