Adderall XR and Seizure medications

Tue, 12/16/2008 - 19:07
I just went to see my doctor for my check - up and I told her of some symtoms that I have been having for a while now and she put me on the very small dose of Adderall XR, which is 5mg. I was wondering if anyone else is taking Adderall or Adderall XR with their seizure meds. I am already taking Lamictal, Keppra XR, and Klonopin. One of the side effects of this medication is possible seizures, but it is very rare. I was just wondering what others thought too.

I too am on several medications to control my seizures (Keppra, Neurontin, Diamox Sequals) and I am on adderall. I take the regular adderall just in case I start having a really bad seizure day, this way the drug is shorter in my system and will be out in a few hours compared to the 12hrs for the XR.  I take 5mg in am and 5 mg around lunch if needed. Dr says that the seizure threshold is less when take the adderall, that's why chose this route.

My doctor informed me that stimulant medications can increase the seizure threshold but it's very dependent on the person. I have been prescribed Adderall XR 30mg for about five years now for ADHD and was diagnosed with epilepsy (CP with secondary generalizations) in July 2010. According to my GP and neurologist, it is highly unlikely that the stimulants caused the TC seizures so I continue to take Adderall XR with my AEDs (currently weaning off Keppra and adding Lamictal). Unless you are very sensitive to stimulant meds then I wouldn't be too concerned about the Adderall XR. You are also on a very small dose, which is a good thing. Best of luck to you.

If a person has some type of epilepsy, the stimulants - alerting agents (examples: coffee, caffeine compounds, Ritalin, Dexedrine, Adderall and so on) can lower the seizure threshold/change how epilepsy medicines work. That's my understanding. Classic epilepsy and classic ADHD / ADD / Hyperactivity / attention deficit(s) are different.
